Chapter 1

A red sports car pulled into Hawthorne.

“This place is still a dump after all these years,” said a pretty girl in worn-out clothes from the passenger seat. She looked around with clear disgust, her eyes landing on a crooked old sign across the street that read Hawthorne Orphanage.

Her name was Nina Edwards. This was the place where someone from an underground group had taken her years ago, pretending it was an adoption. They raised her to be a killer.

But four years ago, during a mission that brought her back here, Nina found out her birth parents-who she’d been separated from for over a decade-had never stopped searching for her. So she left the organization and returned.

“Can’t you think it over one more time, Nina?” The blond guy behind the wheel looked at her, pleading. Something else flickered behind his brown eyes. “The cost is huge. You-”

“You know me, Chris.” Nina gave a faint smile, brushing her fingers across the thin silver chain wrapped around her left wrist. A ring hung from it, its blue sapphire glowing gently.

Then Chris heard her soft, almost whispered voice. “I’ve missed them so much all these years.”

She looked tired, like a ship that had finally reached harbor after sailing through endless nights. Chris’s face clouded over. “Then… just don’t forget me, okay? Please?”

“No promises,” Nina said with a bright, playful look in her eyes. “If I make a bunch of new friends, I might not remember you at all.”

She got out of the car. Chris instinctively reached for her but grabbed nothing. His voice cracked with urgency and sadness as he called after her, “Nina!”

Outside, Nina smiled and caught a ray of sunlight in her palm. She looked back at him, her eyes shining like stars. “It’s such a beautiful day,” she said. “Goodbye, my best friend.”

Chris couldn’t say a word. He knew this was the freedom Nina had fought so hard for. But he also knew that peace wouldn’t

come easy.

A soft breeze blew in through the window, leaving behind a bitter feeling in his chest. When he came to, Nina was already

gone.

He looked at the empty passenger seat, clenched his fists, and made a vow. “No matter what, I’ll protect you, Nina.”

The summer afternoon was so hot, even the cicadas were too lazy to sing.

Nina sat on a swing made of rough rope under the big tree at Hawthorne Orphanage, gently rocking back and forth with her hands on the ropes. A faint smile played on her lips.

Thanks to how run-down the orphanage had stayed for years, it wasn’t hard for her to fake a hospital report and some genetic records-just enough for her parents to get the message that she was here.

“You… are you Nina?” A woman’s voice came from nearby, trembling and full of tears.

Nina looked up and saw a face that shared a few features with her own. The woman’s eyes were wet with tears, her expression overwhelmed with emotion.

Time had left its mark on her, but it only made her look softer, more graceful. What hurt Nina most was the faded floral dress the woman wore-her mother, Yvonne Edwards, probably hadn’t bought a new dress in years.

Standing beside her was Nina’s father, Robert Edwards. His face was sun-darkened, with rough stubble on his chin. Though he looked quite charming in a mature way, the light-blue T-shirt he wore was almost washed white, and his shoes were frayed.

A dull ache spread in Nina’s chest. Still, she forced herself to act surprised and confused. She stood up slowly. “Who… who are you?”

“Nina, it’s me. I’m your mom!” Yvonne burst into tears and ran to her, wrapping her in a tight hug.

The hug almost knocked Nina off balance. But in that moment, a wave of peace washed over her.

And quietly, deep in her heart, she whispered, [Mom, Dad, I’m home.]
