“I told him I’d think about it.”
A large hand shot out and cupped my chin, tilting my face towards his. “Say. That. Again.”
“I said!” I yelped, then melted. “I said, Leo Vance, I love you too. I only love you. If you hadn’t found me when I was broken and lost on the street all those years ago, I would have just given up. It was only after I met you
that I learned what it feels like to be truly loved, what it feels like to have someone who always has your
back. It’s so safe, so…”
Mmphh.
A pair of warm lips cut off my rambling. After a long moment, he pulled away.
“Chatterbox,” he murmured, his voice husky. “I ask you to repeat four words, and you give me a whole essay.
I never knew Professor Lin was so passionate.”
His tone was teasing, his usual carefree facade back in place, but I knew. I knew he’d been anxious ever since he first saw Ethan. I’d seen him, standing by the window late at night, smoking and murmuring nonse- nse to our sleeping son. I’d even caught him reading some trashy romance novel on his tablet titled, What To
Do When Your Wife’s First Love Comes Back.
Leo… he was so damn cute.

Chapter 2
“What are you thinking about? Who are you thinking about?” he asked, his eyes narrowing again.
“The man right in front of me.”
“I don’t believe you,” he said, a wicked glint in his eye. “You’ll have to prove it.”
With that, he reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a string of condoms.
“Use all of these,” he whispered, his voice a low growl, “and then I’ll believe you.”
My face flushed a deep crimson. I pushed him away, stammering, “Leo, we’re in the car!”
“So what?” He grinned, the look on his face pure predator. “This isn’t some poor schmuck’s apartment comp-
lex. This is our villa. We have a… very… private… driveway.”
And so, I gave in. And he believed me.
After that day, Ethan never bothered me again. Whether his heart was finally broken for good, or whether my
threats had finally scared him off, I didn’t know or care. I was just relieved.
I did hear, through the grapevine, that he spent a fortune hiring a private investigator to track down Chloe. Something happened. All I know is that she ended up in the hospital with serious injuries.
I didn’t dwell on it. As long as he stayed away from me, it was none of my business. My life was full enough
as it was.
Three months later, on my birthday, I found a small package on my doorstep. A single cup of coffee and a
small cupcake.
There was a heart–shaped sticky note on the cup.
It read: Happy Birthday. I hope you find a lifetime of happiness.
I crumpled the note in my fist and threw it, along with the coffee and cake, into the trash.
Then I turned and ran toward my happiness.
