Chapter 29#
When we finally got home, I helped Jordan to the couch and grabbed the first aid kit.
“I’m sorry. You got dragged into this because of me,” I said quietly, gently dabbing the cut on his cheek with some gauze. “If you want to press charges, I’ve got the security footage from the front door. I’ll take your side”
Jordan let out a small chuckle. “Oh yeah? You’d really stand by my side?“#
I patted my chest with mock seriousness. “Of course, Between you and Beckett, I’d much rather have you.”
Jordan gave me a look so tender it made my heart skip. “I meant what I said, you know. About us getting married. Maybe you can consider it?”
My smile faltered. My heart skipped.
I wasn’t ready for this. Jordan’s gaze held mine like he was waiting for an answer. I panicked.”
“I–I think I the baby crying” I blurted, scrambling to my feet. “Gotta go check on him. Make yourself at home.”
I practically ran up the stairs.

exactly what Jordan meant. I wasn’t stupid. I just couldn’t bring myself to go there–not after everything that happened with
Beckett./
I’d already lost too much–my health, my trust, my sense of safety. My heart, once so full, was now wary and scarred. Everything in me screamed not to trust too easily again.
All I could focus on now was surviving tomorrow’s surgery. That alone took everything I had. There was no room in my heart for anything else–not now.
I scooped up my baby, holding him close. All I wanted… was to live. So I could stay by his side longer.
The next day, my parents and Jordan accompanied me to the hospital.
As the surgery drew closer, the weight of it all finally hit me. I hadn’t felt nervous until now–but standing on the edge between life and death? It shook me.W
Mom held my hand tightly. “You’re gonna be fine. The surgery will be a success, okay? Your dad and I will be waiting for you right here. Your baby’s at home waiting for his mommy to come back.“W
I nodded through watery eyes and forced a smile. “I’ll make it through. You’ll see–I’ll walk out of that OR healthy and strong. You two just wait for me, alright? I’ll be around long enough to take care of you in your old age.”
Right then, the nurse called my name.”
As I turned to follow her, I suddenly heard a voice from behind.”
“Evelyn! Wait–I need to talk to you!”
I turned instinctively and saw Beckett. But whatever he had to say–it didn’t matter. I turned away and followed the nurse down the hallway #
Beckett tried to run after me, but my parents‘ bodyguards stopped him.”
“You’ve got a hell of a nerve showing up here! Haven’t you done enough to my daughter?” My father roared, shaking with fury.”
My mother was no calmer. She stormed up to Beckett and slapped him across the face.
“When I gave you my daughter, what did you promise me? You swore you’d take care of her forever. And not even two years later, you’ve got another woman and you’ve destroyed her life!”
“Get out! And don’t you ever show your face to Evelyn again!“%
Beckett’s eyes filled with tears as he begged, “Dad, Mom, please… I know I messed up. I had no idea Delaney was doing all those awful things behind my back.”
“I’m sorry. I’ll do anything to make it up to Evelyn and our child. Please, just give me a
