Chapter 26
Beckett choked on the word divorce, like just saying it was too much to bear.
Never in a million years did I expect someone like Beckett Shaw to cry in front of me. But even as his tears fell, I felt nothing. No pity. No sadness. Just… disgust.
“Mr. Shaw, we’re divorced. Please respect yourself,” I said flatly.
He froze, clearly stunned by my words.
“Why are you calling me Mr. Shaw? I’m still your husband,” he said, voice shaking. “That divorce doesn’t count–I signed those papers without knowing what they were. It’s not valid.“}
He shook his head in disbelief, as if the idea of me being this cold, this indifferent, was too much to handle. Maybe he was thinking about the way I used to smile at him, the way I used to say his name with warmth. But now, all he saw was the icy stare I throw at him. N Before I could react, he lunged forward and wrapped his arms around me, ignoring my resistance. His tears burned against my neck and I flinched instinctively.
“Let go of me, Mr. Shaw,” I said flatly. “Whether you accept it or not, we’re already divorced.“}]
Beckett couldn’t accept it–not this version of me. Instead of letting go, he held on tighter, like if he loosened his grip even a little, I’d disappear forever.
The closer he got, the more suffocated I felt. I shoved hard at his chest and only then did he finally let go.
“Evelyn… I miss you. I know I messed up, but please, can you forgive me?” His voice cracked as he spoke and then he fumbled inside his pocket, pulling out a wedding ring. In a rush, he reached for my hand, trying to slide it on.
I slapped the ring out of his hand, sending it clattering to the floor.
“What do you want, Beckett?” I snapped. “If you’re here to apologize, then I suggest you turn around and leave. Because I’m not going to forgive you.” I pointed toward the door, signaling him to get out.”
But he acted like he didn’t hear me.
“Evelyn, I know you’re upset about what happened with Delaney.” His voice was hoarse, desperate. “I’ll admit, I was too soft on her. I pitied her after her engagement got called off and yeah–I was too blind to see what she was doing behind my back. But after you left, I realized she was hiding so much from me.”}
“She hurt you, Evelyn. She dared to hurt you!“}
By the time he finished, his face was twisted in rage.”
But the moment he saw me frown, he forced himself to calm down, even forcing a pitiful smile as he added, “I punished her. Severely. She lost the baby, Evelyn. She’s ruined now. That’s what she gets for going behind my back and doing those things to you.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I stared at the guy in front of me, really looked at him. This was the same man who used to love that woman like she hung the moon–and now he’d just tossed her aside like trash. Like she meant nothing. Even the baby… God, even the baby didn’t matter.

art?
“Enough! I don’t want to hear about you and Delaney. Wasn’t she your savior? And yet this is how you repay her? You’d throw her away just like that? You’d even abandon your own child?”
His expression stiffened, panic flickering in his eyes.”
“That’s not true! I never touched her. The baby wasn’t mine. It was another man’s. She lied to me too,” he insisted.
