Chapter 110
Delaney quickly returned to her usual soft–spoken, innocent demeanor. Beckett looked at her, trying to shake off the unsettling feeling that had taken hold of him.
“No, it’s just a mistake,” he mumbled, mostly to her but really to himself. “There’s no way I divorced Evelyn.“}
He kept saying it over and over, like a chant that could somehow undo the truth.
But Delaney wasn’t about to let an opportunity like that slip through her fingers.
“Beckett…” she said gently, her voice laced with pretend hesitation, “since you and Evelyn are no longer together, maybe it’s time for us to take the next step? We could get married. Make it official.“}
His head whipped toward her.
“What?”
His head snapped toward her, eyes bloodshot and full of rage.}
“I said I’m not divorced from Evelyn! Why the hell are you proposing that stupid idea?!“}
Delaney tried to laugh it off, stepping closer to him to pout and act cute like she always did. But this time, Beckett shoved her away. Hard. She stumbled to the floor with a cry, grabbing her stomach.”
“wasn’t trying to upset you,” she sobbed. “I just… I just wanted to get our baby registered properly. My stomach really hurts. Can you take
me to the hospital? Please?“}
Beckett hesitated, guilt seeping in. Despite everything, he still drove her to the hospital and stayed by her side.
As Delaney sipped the broth he’d brought her, she secretly let out a breath of relief–thinking the storm was over. §
But the moment Beckett stepped out of her room, his entire demeanor changed.
He pulled out his phone and called his assistant.
“I want you to dig into everything Delaney’s done lately. Check all the home surveillance, even the surrounding street cams.“} His eyes were cold now–sharp and calculating. He hadn’t meant to investigate her. But something about all of this was off.”
Before he knew about the divorce, Delaney always played the role of the selfless, quiet companion. She never asked for a title, never pushed for marriage. She only ever said she wanted to stay by his side.}
And Beckett knew–no one is that pure.
But Delaney was his savior. She was also the girl he had once placed on a pedestal. If it hadn’t been for the broken engagement, he wouldn’t have even had the chance to reconnect with her.
So back then, he ignored every red flag.”
He’d only wanted to take care of her after her failed engagement. Then one night–drunk and vulnerable–they ended up in bed. She got pregnant.”
With gratitude and nostalgia clouding his judgment, Beckett let her stay. And before long, he became addicted to the illusion of Delaney- the girl he never got to have all those years ago.”
He started to take her side. He took her side. Again and again. Even when it was me on the other end of it. Even when it was my home she was quietly taking apart. My life she was weaving herself into.
No matter what I said, no matter how loud my silence got, he always chose her.
And now?
Now, the scales had tipped too
he could feel the weight of it.
But here’s the part that still stings–despite everything, part of him still believed I’d come back.
He thought I’m the same Evelyn who used to forgive him for anything, who’d smile after a few soft words and let it all go. He’s convinced I loved him too much to ever truly walk away.
But the truth was, Beckett never knew what it looked like when I stopped loving him.
Now he’s about to find out.
