Leroy froze. His expression tightened, growing several degrees colder.
“In wealthy families, there’s no such thing as real love. If you ask me, Uncle Neil, you should let Cecilia go. Ha–Ce- cilia, I bet you don’t even know. My Uncle Neil’s not exactly a good guy.”
One second, he was smugly trying to stir the pot–the next, he watched in stunned silence as I smiled and wrapped my arm around Neil’s.
I looked up at him.
“Neil, why’d you come down?”
Neil gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind my car.
“Security said there was some lunatic downstairs, so I figured I’d come take a look.”
The air between the two of them turned sharp in an instant.
I jumped in quickly.
“Leroy, if there’s nothing else, please don’t show up here again. We’re not that close, and my husband tends to get jealous.”
Leroy scanned my face, searching my cool expression for any crack.
“Cecilia, I know you only married him out of anger. If you’re afraid to divorce, I can help you!”
I almost snapped.
“Even if I did get a divorce, where would I go? Do I even have a home?”
“You could come ba-” Leroy choked on the words.
He’d meant to say, “Come back to the Quinn’s residence,” but he couldn’t get it out.
“Then let’s leave it at that. Congrats on your wedding,” I said.
I looped my arm through Neil’s again and started to leave–only to have Leroy step in front of us, blocking the way.
“Give me a chance to prove it to you. Whether it’s Rachel or Elise, I’ll make sure they pay for what they’ve done to you,” he said.
My gaze flickered. I gave him a rare, deliberate smile.
The kind that made him freeze, just for a second.

“Alright. You clean up the mess, then maybe I’ll think about it,” I said lightly.
I turned and got into the car. The door shut behind me, sealing off Leroy’s burning stare.
Immediately, Neil leaned over, demanding a kiss.
“Honey, you’re not actually thinking about him, are you? I’m the one who got that guy to confess about Elise and the others–shouldn’t I be getting all the credit for that?”
I couldn’t help laughing.
“That depends. Let’s see how well you behave.”
The day my dad died, Neil was rushed to the hospital too.
That’s when I finally realized that I’d actually met him a few times as a kid.
Neil was only a couple of years older than Leroy. They used to play together back at the Quinn’s residence, but I’d never known his name back then.
Before we got our marriage license, Neil had made me watch him get a full physical, personally.
Said it was “just to prove your future husband’s clean.”
Only on our wedding night did I learn the truth that Neil wasn’t “born impotent” at all. Once he got going, it was near- ly impossible to stop.
His phone buzzed.
It was a message from Leroy.
“Bring Cecilia with you in three days. Elise’s birthday banquet. You won’t want to miss the show.”
