Before I could think, I’d sent her sprawling with a resounding slap.
The force of the impact sent a shockwave through the room, and her cries of pain echoed through the halls.
“You forget your place!” I roared.
Bleeding from where she’d scratched my cheek, I was still trying to staunch the flow of blood when the heavy scent of Alex’s rage hit me like a tidal wave.
He burst into the room, his hackles raised and his teeth bared, with Sadina cowering – or perhaps simulating fear – at his heels.
“What is the meaning of this?” he thundered.

Sadina peeked out from behind him.
This was exactly what she’d wanted – a chance to play the victim and turn Alex against me once more.
Sadina draped herself against Alex.
“Lia, I understand your frustration.
With Alex rejecting your claim as his destined mate, it must be hard to accept,” she cooed, but her eyes glinted with cruel amusement.
“But taking it out on my poor servant? Look at the state you’ve left her in!”

With a snarl, I lashed out instinctively.
Sadina let out a shrill scream, flying backward as if struck by an invisible force.
She crumpled to the ground, clutching her chest.
Her eyes rolled back, and a feigned froth formed at the corners of her mouth.
“Sadina!” Alex’s howl shook the rafters.

“You venomous snake, Lia! Sadina’s heart condition makes her vulnerable to shock, and you knew it! First, you torment her and her servant, and now this?”
“I didn’t do anything!” I roared back. “She attacked me first!”
“Lies! You’ve been playing the innocent act, waiting for the perfect moment to eliminate your competition. You want to be Luna so badly, you’d kill for it!”
The servants‘ claws shredded my remaining clothing, their snarls mingling with the ravenous howls of the gathered pack.

Each lash sent jolts of searing pain through my body.
Alex stalked forward.
“This she wolf and her treacherous pack have spread lies like a plague!” he roared.
“They claim she possesses the accursed ‘Fertility Fang‘–the power to sire pups with the dying and heal the most grievous of Lycan wounds.”
The pack members growled in unison.
“Under the guise of this false prophecy, she has swindled our people, defied the pack laws, and dared to lay hands on my fated mate!”

Alex’s claws unsheathed, glinting in the moonlight as he pointed at my broken form.
“Today, I shall cleanse our pack of this blight. Let her punishment serve as a warning to all who dare to challenge the order of the wolves!”
The crowd erupted into a frenzy of howls and snarls.
Another wave of salt soaked rods rained down on my back, and I felt my wolf
whimpering in agony.
My wolf thrashed within me.
