Chapter 39
The moment I stepped out of the palace gates, the air was thick with the stench of lies and malicious intent.
Word of my supposed deception had spread faster than a wildfire through the Silvermoon Pack.
As I made my way through the cobblestone streets, the once- respectful nods of the pack members turned into sneers and jeers.
Rotten eggs and spoiled meat came flying at me “Whore!”
someone shouted. “Traitor!”
I wiped the putrid slime from my face.

And then, I looked up.
High above me, on the call house Windspring Brothel, stood Alex.
His wolf – gold eyes were fixed on me, a warning glint in their depths.
Beside him, Sadina clung to his arm, her delicate features marred by a false look of
concern.
“Is this the woman Luna chose for you?”
Sadina’s voice, a sickly sweet purr, carried on the wind.
Her scent made my wolf want to retch.
“What if her claims of fertility are true? Perhaps it would be best if you fulfilled your duty to the pack and took her as your mate

instead.”
Alex’s grip on the balcony railing tightened.
“Do not concern yourself, my love,” he said,.
“She is nothing but a liar and a fraud. You are the only one worthy of being my mate, the future Luna of the Silvermoon Pack.”
Alex’s voice was a velvety purr.
“Have you not heard the pack call her a fraud,” he sneered.
“Even if she truly possesses the fabled Blood, I’d rather let our lineage fade than be bound to a mate I loathe. I am the future Alpha, after all – I choose my own destiny.”
The she–wolf leaned into him.

“But your health, my love,” she murmured. “The pack healers said your Lycan’s curse was worsening.”
Alex threw his head back and laughed.
“Bah! Those old crones know nothing. My ‘ailment‘ will vanish in three moons‘ time.”
I fought to keep my breathing steady.
The rumors that had been spreading like wildfire through the pack – the accusations of witchcraft, the calls for my exile – all of it was part of Alex’s cruel game.
A growl of command rippled through the cobblestone street.
I turned to see a solemn procession approaching, carrying a massive ebony coffin adorned with wolf’s head carvings.

“Merciful Moon Goddess” a she–wolf
wailed.
“The Beta’s time is near.”
Another shook her head mournfully.
“If only there was a true wolf with the sacred fertility blood to save the Beta’s lineage…”
–
My gaze fixed on the lead mourner, a golden eyed she wolf whose tears sparkled like liquid moonlight.
–
Something about the coffin’s intricate designs nagged at my memory.
This was my chance.
My only chance to escape Alex’s clutches.

For days, I’d holed up blocking out the world.
On the third day, when I was presented with rotting venison, I snapped.
“This is unacceptable, I hissed
“I may not be Alex’s chosen mate, but as a guest of the Luna herself, I demand better treatment.”
“Miss Sadina has taken residence in the palace,” the servant sneered, her eyes glowing with malicious glee.
“Lord Alex decreed that all provisions go first to his beloved. You’re only entitled to the scraps she deems unfit.”
“So this… this slop is what’s left of her leavings?”

With a derisive snort, the servant dumped the contents of the bowl into the nearby slop bucket, the foul smell of rotting meat and spoiled berries filling the air.
“What else would it be? A lying, scheming wolf like you doesn’t deserve anything better. You should be grateful we’re not feeding you from the trash heap.”
