Chapter 26
Felicia’s POV
Five days later, Kevin left for the front lines.
Before he went, he handed me a bag stuffed full of pine nuts and said, “Eat one a day. By the time you finish the last one, I’ll be back.”
I snorted a laugh. “They’ll be rotten by then.”
He just grinned and leaned in, pressing his forehead against mine like it was the most serious promise in the world.
“Then I’ll make sure I’m back before they go bad.”
I didn’t say anything–just nodded, watching him walk away until his figure disappeared

down the path. Something inside me tugged painfully as he went.
A month or two passed. The day of Larissa’s execution finally came, and word came from the Werewolf Council–she wanted to see me before she died.
It felt pointless. But they assured me she was locked up tight, no strength left in her to do harm, and maybe… I don’t know. Maybe I just wanted to see what was left of her.
The prison was as damp and miserable as I remembered. When I stepped inside her cell block, I barely recognized her.
Once–beautiful Larissa now looked like a creature dragged from the bottom of a swamp–hair a tangled mess, face bruised and sunken, skin smeared with filth. The guard at my side leaned in and explained in a

low voice.
“She found out she was pregnant a while back. Conditions in here… well, she lost the baby. After that, she just… broke. Didn’t speak, didn’t eat, barely moved. Then today, suddenly clear again. Demanded to see you.”
I took a breath and stepped up to the cell bars.
“Larissa, I called, calm and cold. “What do you want?”
The second she saw me, something inside her snapped awake.
Her eyes locked on mine, and she hurled herself at the bars like a rabid animal.
“This is all your fault! You ruined everything! You… you came back too, didn’t you?”

She was shaking, teeth bared in something between a sob and a snarl.
“I was happy with Samuel in the last life. We were meant to be together! But then you came, again, sticking your nose in where it didn’t belong! My father abandoned me, my stepmother laughed in my face, and Samuel -he died twice for you! You’re the Moonfang princess, you already have everything! Why did you have to take him too? He was all I had!”
She broke down, sobbing so hard her whole body trembled.
And I’ll be honest–her story, her past, yeah, it was rough. She lost her mom young. She was treated like dirt. The only person who ever really saw her was Samuel… and he wasn’t even hers to begin with.

But we all have choices. And she chose wrong.
I stood there and listened, said nothing, then turned and walked away.
The next day, right at noon, Larissa was executed. I heard she cried a lot before the end–said she regretted everything–but regret doesn’t change consequences.
After that, there was nothing left to do but wait.
I counted the days.
Those pine nuts? I ate them all on the first day. My mouth blistered, but I didn’t care. Kevin had shelled them by hand. How could I let them spoil?

By month three, still no sign of him. Word from the border said the rogue wolves were fighting like mad. Their king was holding out.
By month four, nothing. No updates. Not even rumors. I went to see my father, Alpha Godfrey, and the look on his face made my stomach twist.
By month five, still nothing. My father told me he’d sent reinforcements.
By month six, spring was fading, and so was hope.
I stared at that damn pine nut box every day. Thought, Good thing I didn’t save any, or they’d be sprouting by now.
Every morning, I opened my window. Every evening, I closed it without a word. Nothing came. Not a letter. Not a whisper.

Sometimes I’d lie awake, replaying the last life, wondering if I’d made the same mistake again–waiting when I should’ve gone. At least if I had gone, we could’ve died together.
I cried in secret. Quiet tears over my desk, until exhaustion took me.
I didn’t even realize I’d fallen asleep until dawn light brushed my face.
Stretching, I moved to sit up–only to realize I wasn’t on the hard wooden chair anymore. I was in someone’s arms.
My breath caught. I turned slowly.
And there he was.
Kevin.

Smirking like he hadn’t disappeared for half a year and torn my heart out in the process.
“You’re awake? Finally. I’ve been shelling pine nuts all night. They’re ready for you!”
For a second, I couldn’t speak. Couldn’t breathe.
Then I launched myself into his arms.
“You’re back,” I whispered, voice shaking. “You’re really back.”
He wrapped me up in those warm, strong arms. Just like before. Just like always.
“I told you I would be” he said softly. “I came home, Felicia.”
