Chapter 2
My palms were soaked with sweat as I stepped out of my father’s study.
Ten minutes ago, I’d just rewritten fate. In my past life, this was the moment I went running, all starry–eyed, to tell Samuel the “good news.” His response? A lukewarm, “Alright.”
I’d barely rounded the corridor when I bumped into all four of them–my four so–called childhood fiancé candidates.
“Felicia, who did you pick?” Elbert practically had mischief written across his face. His dad was the current Delta, and if he didn’t get picked as my mate, he’d inherit that title. Honestly, I always thought he was more interested in sparring than mating.

Jeffrey, the polished gentleman and son of Moonfang Pack’s wealthiest wolf, offered. a smooth smile. “Do we even have to ask? Of the four of us, the least likely to end up with Felicia is Kevin. If those two ever got mated, they’d probably tear down the whole packhouse in a week. Obviously, it has to be Samuel–Felicia’s been tailing him since we were pups!”
I didn’t respond.
Instead, I looked straight at the two names they couldn’t stop tossing around: Beta Kevin, lounging lazily against a pillar like none of this mattered, and Gamma Samuel, sitting in a rocking chair with a book in his lap, perfectly composed in a crisp white shirt.
He was beautiful. I’d admit that–even now.

That beauty fooled me once and cost me a lifetime.
Just as I was about to speak, Samuel stood. And then–he dropped to his knees in front of
- me.
“Felicia,” he said, voice low and steady, “I’ve already found my fated mate. Please, I’m begging you… don’t choose me.”
My breath caught.
That… That hadn’t happened in my last life.
His eyes were full of quiet desperation, tinged with guilt. And in that one moment, a terrifying thought struck me like lightning-
Did he… remember too?
Was Samuel reborn like I was?

Is that why he didn’t even want to pretend anymore? He’d rather offend my father, Alpha Godfrey, than spend another second tangled up with me?
My voice trembled. “You know what happens if you reject me.”
“I’d rather be banished from Moonfang Pack” he said, bowing his head again, this time hitting the floor with a dull thud, “than live without my fated mate.”
I felt something inside me crack, sharp and cold.
So being with me is that unbearable? In our last life, I spent decades grieving him. This life, he wouldn’t even give me a single year?
The words “I didn’t choose you” were already

at the tip of my tongue.
But I swallowed them.
Why should he get peace after everything he put me through? Why should I make it easy?
No. Let him stew in uncertainty. Let him suffer for once.
So I straightened, chin held high. “I’ve already told Father who I chose. As for who it is… well, you’ll all find out soon enough. I’ll announce my mate on our wedding day, ten days from now. You’re all invited.””
And with that, I turned and walked off, head held high.
Until I smacked right into something soft.
I staggered back and looked down.

She was sitting on the floor, big doe eyes welling up with tears.
Before I could say anything, she dropped to her knees, pressing her forehead hard against the cold floor.
“I’m sorry, Miss Felicia! I didn’t mean to-”
Her voice was trembling, but I barely
registered it before a white blur streaked into view.
Samuel.
One second she was groveling on the floor, the next he was right there, stepping in front of her like I was the monster.

His eyes, those calm, aloof eyes I used to love so much, now blazed with something I had never seen before.
Fury.
“Felicia,” he growled, “Larissa knows she made a mistake. Why humiliate her like this?”
I blinked at him, stunned. “You think I told her to kneel?”
I could feel the rage bubbling up, tightening my chest. Gods, this was just like last time. Every encounter with her, and she had to put on this pitiful little performance, like I was some cruel, heartless villain tormenting an innocent.
But when had I ever laid a hand on her?

And of course, Samuel didn’t care. Didn’t even look at me. He bent down to lift her, his arms gentle, careful–as if she were some fragile treasure.
He turned too quickly.
And in his haste to sweep her away from the “big bad princess,” his shoulder slammed straight into mine.
Pain lanced through me as I lost my footing. My body reeled backward-
Then darkness.
My head hit the stone steps with a brutal crack.
For a moment, all I felt was pain.
Then chaos.

Voices shouting. Footsteps pounding. Someone calling my name-
“Felicia!”
That voice.
I blinked through the haze, vision swimming.
And then I saw him.
Beta Kevin.
The laid–back troublemaker who always looked like he was seconds away from a nap or a smirk.
Except now?
Now, he looked panicked.

Really, truly panicked.
And in his eyes–wide, wild, and full of something I couldn’t name–there was no trace of amusement.
Only worry.
And… something else.
Love?
I must’ve hit my head harder than I thought.
