Chapter 7
That night, I found myself staring at
him.
Alpha Joseph was fast asleep on the couch, his features softened in
slumber.

But I knew better.

My fingers hovered in the air, tracing
the lines of his face from afar–lines
I used to know like the back of my
hand.
A sharp ache stabbed at my chest.
There were three lives between us now. Three graves. No matter how much I remembered our beginning, there was no going back.
Not ever.
I saw Queenie again one week later, in
the afternoon.
I was sitting by the window, letting the sunlight warm my skin. One hand rested absently over my belly. I didn’t even realize I was doing it anymore.

I’d grown used to this pup. Maybe
even… attached.
He was growing inside me, part of me.
And I loved him in a way I didn’t know was possible.
But I couldn’t let that show.
Not when Alpha Joseph was always looking for a weakness to exploit. Not when love could be turned into a
weapon.
The door opened with a quiet click, and Queenie sauntered in.
Decked in designer brands from head to toe, glowing with health, her smugness practically radiated off her. Her belly was slightly swollen- probably as far along as I was.
In comparison, I looked like hell. Pale,

hollow–eyed, worn down from grief and sleepless nights. Losing my family. had aged me a decade.
And because of the stress and my
refusal to eat, my pup was smaller than he should’ve been.
“You’re a curse, you know that?” Queenie sneered, not even bothering to hide her venom. “Your parents and your sister all died because of you. Maybe that was just fate. They got what they deserved. But you? You’re still here, walking around like you haven’t ruined everything.”
She laughed and smoothed a hand over her bump.
“Joseph takes me everywhere now. Every event, every meeting–I’m the one by his side. I’ll be the true Luna of
the Black Mist Pack soon enough. And

I hadn’t planned to say anything. I
didn’t want to waste words on her.
But she crossed a line the moment
she insulted my family.
I stood, slow and steady, walking
toward her.
“If you’re so sure of your place,” I said quietly, “why are you even here?”
She scoffed. “I just came to see how pathetic you are.”
I gave her a tight smile. “Even at my worst, I’m still the Luna of this pack. And Joseph? He’s still married to me.
That title you’re so desperate for? I
couldn’t care less about it.”
That struck a nerve.
She snapped. “So what? You still think.

am I here? If he loved you, why would your family be dead? You think that
was a coincidence?”
My blood ran cold.
“I barely had to lift a finger. And he slaughtered your entire family just to appease me. That’s how important I
am to him.”
She smiled, smug and triumphant. “I live in your home now, Melissa. That should tell you everything.”
I let out a laugh–low, dark, and bitter.
So that was it. Queenie had pulled the strings all along. And Joseph… had
danced to her tune.
Rage roared through me. I grabbed a fistful of her hair and slapped her

across the face–once, twice, three
times.
She shrieked. “You psycho! You dare
lay a hand on me? Joseph will destroy you for this! I’ll make sure you beg for
death!”
Another slap. My hand stung, but I
didn’t care.
“Go ahead,” I hissed, my voice shaking with fury. “Let him kill me. I’ve been waiting for it. I never asked to live.
He’s the one who won’t let me die.”
All the pain, the helplessness, the hatred I’d bottled up over these past months exploded in that moment. I struck her again and again until her
face swelled and her cries turned into
panicked sobs.
Then–suddenly–she lashed out.

I collapsed with a scream, curled on the floor, clutching my abdomen as pain ripped through me.
Then came the sound of a door
bursting open, and Alpha Joseph’s voice thundered into the room.
“What the hell is going on in here?!”
Queenie didn’t miss a beat. She
flung herself into his arms, sobbing theatrically.
Joseph! I just came to check on her, and she lost her mind! Look at my face–she attacked me! I’m carrying your pup and she’s jealous–she even cursed our baby! Joseph, you have to
protect me!”
But Joseph didn’t even glance at her.

He shoved her aside and rushed to my side, dropping to his knees.
“Melissa,” he said urgently, wrapping his arms around me. “Talk to me- where does it hurt? Are you okay?”
