Chapter 5

Alpha Joseph froze for a split second,
his hand pausing as he pulled the
blanket over me.
He didn’t answer my question. Instead, he changed the subject.
“Melissa, why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant?”
Instinctively, I placed my trembling hands over my belly, a sharp ache stabbing through my heart. “The pup… it’s gone, isn’t it?”
His voice was low, almost gentle. “Don’t worry. The pup is safe.”
My eyes widened in disbelief. “That’s impossible. After a crash like that…”
I remembered it clearly–how my

mother had wrapped herself around me, using her own body to shield
mine. Her last act of love.
A sick feeling twisted in my stomach. Before I could speak again, the door burst open.
Queenie waltzed in with a
sugar–sweet smile, but the moment her eyes landed on the bruises and
bandages covering me, she gasped and dramatically covered her mouth.
“Oh my Goddess, Melissa, you’re still so injured? I heard the doctor say your mom took the brunt of it to protect you–must’ve been brutal. And yet, you still ended up like this? Guess she died for nothing then.”
Boom.
My mind went completely blank. A

deafening silence filled my head.
What…?
Mom… died?
“Shut up. That’s enough!” Alpha Joseph barked, grabbing Queenie by the arm and shoving her toward the door. “You’d better watch your mouth. Don’t make me forget my
manners.”
Queenie pouted as he pushed her out. “Aw, don’t be mad, Joseph. I was just trying to comfort her. Are you still coming to my place tonight?”
He glanced back at me, clearly irritated. “We’ll talk later. Just go.”
The door clicked shut behind her.
When Joseph turned around, his face. paled as he saw me dragging myself

out of bed, stumbling toward the exit despite the pain racking my body.
“Melissa! What are you doing? You haven’t recovered. The doctor said you’re at risk of losing the pup–you need bed rest!”
I glared at him, my voice trembling. “How am I supposed to rest? Tell me the truth. Is my mom really… gone? Did she really die protecting me?”
The words choked in my throat. The pain was too much. Tears blurred my vision and streamed down my cheeks.
Joseph stepped forward and pulled
me into his arms. His voice was low and raw.
“The crash was too severe. She died on the spot… protecting you.”

My knees buckled. I opened my
mouth, but no sound came. It felt like something had been ripped out of my chest, leaving a gaping hole where my heart used to be.
All I could do was cry.
My mother was gone.
The last family I had in this world- gone, because of me.
I had only wanted to escape with her, to protect her. How did it all come to
this?
I slapped Joseph hard across the face, then collapsed to the floor, my body giving out.
“Joseph… I must’ve been blind to ever love a monster like you. Why can’t you just leave me alone?”

Joseph clenched his jaw, his eyes. turning cold.
“You want me to leave you alone? Tell me, Melissa–who was the one that swore they’d never leave me? Who promised to love me no matter what happened? Has it really been that long since you made those vows?”
He sneered. “Women. So full of sweet
lies.”
I let out a bitter laugh.
Everyone I’ve ever loved is dead. And yet, I’m still alive. For what?
If I hadn’t fallen for someone I
should’ve feared… if I hadn’t thrown
my whole heart into a man who didn’t deserve it, maybe… maybe my family
would still be here.

I glared at him, my voice filled with pain and fury.
“Did you ever see me as a person, Joseph? Or was I just a toy to you- something to own, to control? When you got bored, why didn’t you just let me go? Why drag my family into this? Why punish them for my love?”
My voice cracked. “My parents treated you like a son. My sister called you brother! And you… you had someone rape her like that?”
His eyes darkened, jaw flexing. I didn’t
care.
Every word was a dagger, and I meant them to cut deep.
“I was wrong to love you. My whole family was wrong to ever trust a wolf
