Chapter 23 Recovery
Louis’s sister had once abandoned the excellent job she had worked so hard to land, without hesitation, to become a doctor at the Expeditionary Warrior Camp for the wolf pack.
Lucy had always thought she was incredibly brave, but she had been deeply saddened when she heard of his sister’s death.
“My sister became a doctor because her mate was a werewolf warrior in that expedition. Cici is their child. After mate died, Cici was entrusted to me.”

Only now did Lucy learn the full story. Hearing such a heavy tale, she felt an ache in her heart. She looked at Cici, who was sitting quietly beside Lily in the hospital room.
“Lily’s done a wonderful job raising Cici, hasn’t she?” Louis smiled. “There’s no need to feel sad for her. She has a great mom now, and soon, she’ll have a great dad too. Though I suppose she’s gotten used to calling me Uncle Louis.”
“Louis, there’s something else. Lucy hesitated. “You know Alpha Michael still…
Loves Lily?”
“Yes”
Louis had witnessed the past five years. He had seen Michael’s cold and violent treatment of Lily countless times and couldn’t understand why Michael would now claim to love her.
“He’s a bastard, Louis said flatly. “Lucy, the job you mentioned before, it wasn’t with him, was it?”
“Well… Lucy hesitated briefly. “But Alpha Michael, he has a long scar on his arm
This was news to Louis. He looked surprised but raised an eyebrow, indicating for Lucy to continue.
“I don’t mean anything by it,” Lucy explained. She had caught a glimpse of the scar by accident while cleaning the CEO’s office. Michael had been leaning back in his chair, and as he unbuckled his watch, she had noticed the mark. “Maybe Alpha Michael truly regrets what he did.”
“No apology can ever cover up the harm he caused,” Louis said, summarizing their past five years with finality.
Lucy would no longer feel sympathy for that man.
Two weeks later, Lily’s recovery had progressed well enough for her to go home.
The day they left the hospital, the sun was shining brightly.
Louis carried Cici to the car and then turned to help Lily.
“I’m fine. You don’t need to carry me,” Lily protested. “Do you think I’m made of glass?”
Ignoring her protests, Louis picked her up. Cici grinned widely, giggling. “Mommy, are you a kid too? Uncle Louis is so strong, he carried both of us!”
“Yeah.” Louis said smugly as he buckled Lily’s seatbelt and gently brushed Cici’s cheek. “Remember to praise me like this from now on, okay? No more calling me immature.”
Cici stuck out her tongue at him.
Everything seemed particularly beautiful in the sunlight. Lily’s eyes crinkled slightly in a smile as she looked out the window. She suddenly noticed a figure standing straight at the hospital entrance.
Lily paused.
Just as the car was about to start, she gently tapped Louis’s shoulder. “I need to get out for a moment.”

Louis had noticed Michael earlier but had chosen to ignore him. Now, seeing that Lily had caught sight of him, he sighed and turned off the engine. Lily smiled softly, leaned over, and kissed his cheek. “I’ll be right back. Stay here with Cici”
Lily walked toward Michael.
“Michael,” she called, her hair blowing gently in the breeze. Her complexion was much better now, her cheeks a little rounder. echoing the innocence she once had. “What’s wrong with your leg?”
Michael was taken aback, not expecting her to come to him. He awkwardly looked away, staring at the ground, yet unable to stop glancing at Lily.
“Are you leaving?” he avoided her question, his voice hoarse and barely audible. “When are you leaving?”
