“Louis!” Lucy’s terrified voice echoed through the stairwell. She ran towards him, tears streaming down her face, clutching an unconscious Cici in her arms. “Louis, Cici suddenly fainted!”
Louis’s mind went blank.
Stay calm!
He looked at Lucy, who had collapsed in front of him, exhausted, and at Cici, whose face was flushed red. He repeated to himself, I must stay calm.
Michael, who hadn’t gone far, heard Lucy’s cries and quickly knelt to check Cici’s flushed face. “Lucy? Why are you here?” But he swiftly took control of the situation. “Stop crying! This is a hospital. Let’s get to the emergency room!”
“Lucy,” Louis said as he lifted Cici’s shirt, revealing a mass of red welts on her abdomen. Suddenly, it clicked. “Did you give Cici something to eat earlier?”
Louis’s sister had allergies, but Cici had never shown any allergic reactions, so he and Lily hadn’t been particularly cautious
about it.
Knowing the allergen would help. Lucy wiped her tears, quickly recalling. “I took her downstairs and she didn’t want candy, so I bought her a bread roll… it had peanut butter!”
Peanuts are a common allergen. Wasting no time, Michael scooped up Cici, ignoring Louis‘ outstretched hands. “Lily needs someone here. I won’t harm her child. Let me take her!”
Louis recognized the reason in Michael’s words. Cici couldn’t wait, and with Lily having just signed a critical condition notice. he watched helplessly, jaw clenched, as Lucy and Michael sprinted away with Cici. In frustration, he punched the wall.
Blood dripped from his knuckles as he roared in helpless fury, sinking to his knees with a sob.
Michael had been off all morning. He felt his body temperature drop as he held the light, fragile body of Lily’s cherished.
child close.
When he stumbled on the steps, he instinctively tightened his hold on Cici, protecting her with his arms and back from the harsh edges.
Lucy gasped, hurrying to help him up.
Michael forced himself to his feet, quickly checking Cici’s condition.
“Alpha Michael, let me carry her!”
“It’s okay,” he said through clenched teeth, ignoring the searing pain in his ankle. He sprinted towards the emergency room.
The doctors quickly diagnosed Cici’s condition and administered adrenaline and loratadine. The terrifying rash eventually subsided.
Lucy couldn’t stop crying, feeling immense guilt for what had happened to Cici under her watch.
Michael finally exhaled in relief, though his ankle throbbed with intense pain, making sweat bead on his forehead. He handed Cici to Lucy and closed his eyes.
His inner wolf had been unsettled since the previous day and was now gravely weakened.
Now, Michael’s body began to burn with fever, his heart throbbing painfully, his mind growing increasingly hazy.
As the fever spread, consuming his will, he could still hear Lucy’s quiet sobs. “Stop crying, Lucy. It’s not your fault,” he murmured.

Lucy, wiping sweat from Cici’s face, felt even more guilty. “If I hadn’t bought her that bread…”

“You didn’t know Cici was allergic to peanuts. Finding out in the hospital was a stroke of luck amidst the misfortune. We’ll know to avoid it from now on.”
He made sense, and Lucy nodded.
Only then did she notice how feverish Michael was, his cheekbones flushed, his lips dry and cracked, looking utterly exhausted.
Alarmed, she asked. “Alpha Michael, are you alright?”
“I’m fine.” Michael mumbled, unable to think clearly due to the pain. “I’m just thirsty. Can you get me some water, Lily…”
In his delirium, he called out Lily’s name. Lucy thought, Alpha Michael must still love Lily deeply,
But Lily had found a new mate, and they had a child,
Lucy cradled Cici tighter, grabbed the water cup from the bedside table, and handed it to Michael.
After drinking. Michael seemed somewhat revived, sitting up straighter.
After hesitating a long time, Lucy quietly said. “Alpha, you and Lily
Michael’s expression was confused, and after a while, he said, “She was my mate.”
So it was true….
Sam had told her that Michael frequently saw a therapist because of his deceased mate. He must have cared deeply for Lily.
“Was there some misunderstanding between you and Lily? You you seem to love her very much, Lucy said cautiously.
Yes.
Perhaps because of the fever or the pain coursing through his body, Michael felt an urge to open up.
Lucy’s clear eyes, with an unintentional hint of reverence, reminded him of Lily from years ago.
I love her very much,” Michael murmured. “Whether it was eight years ago, three years ago, or now.”
