Michael wiped the blood from his mouth as he watched Louis hurry away, quietly soothing Cici. Michael suddenly said. “I remember the nearest department here is Dialysis. Louis, is someone in your family sick?”
Louis’s tall frame froze for a moment. Then, with a cold sneer, he replied, “None of your business.”
An unbelievable thought formed in Michael’s mind. As he struggled to stand, the werewolf doctor assigned to greet him approached, surprised at Michael’s disheveled state. “Michael, what happened to you?”
“Nothing, just a little fall.” Michael straightened his messy clothes, his expression unnervingly calm despite the uncontrollable shaking of his hand at his side.
“Michael, maybe you should come back another time,” the doctor said, apologetically. “The director just went to perform preoperative preparations for that critical patient.”
“It’s fine, saving lives is more important.” Michael replied quietly, “Could you help me with something?”
What do you need? I’ll help if I can.”
“Could you help me find someone?” Michael’s eyes glinted with a peculiar light as he smiled faintly, a mixture of coldness and desperate hope. “A woman, about 28 or 29, who must have been admitted recently. I have a name, though she might not go by it. I’d like to see the medical records of anyone who fits the description.
“Her name is Lily.”
Louis, though troubled, continued to soothe Cici until her sobs subsided. He then sternly cupped her face. “You mustn’t run off like that again, understand? What if someone snatched you away?”
“I wanted to buy candy for Mommy. The doctor gave her a lot of bitter medicine again, Cici said, pouting as tears welled up in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Uncle Louis. Please don’t be mad at me.”
“I’m not mad.” Louis’s heart melted as he hugged Cici tightly and patted her head. ‘I was just scared you’d gone missing. That would break my heart”
“I understand now; I won’t run off again.”
Louis wiped away Cici’s tears and sighed softly.
He knew Michael had started to become suspicious. A man like him, once he sensed something amiss, would latch onto it like a wolf with meat, determined to get to the bottom of it–especially when it concerned Lily.
Over the past two weeks, Louis had heard various rumors about Michael, magnified to ludicrous extremes that made his heart race with anxiety.
Hiding Lily was going to be incredibly difficult.
The doctor emerged from the consultation room, having removed his mask, and spoke to Louis, “The patient’s current condition is stable. Considering the wolfsbane has been in her system for years, I recommend surgery as soon as possible. We looked at the schedule and can do it by next week at the latest, What do you think?”
Caught between being discovered by Michael and restoring Lily’s health, it was an easy decision for Louis. He resolutely chose the latter. “We agree, the sooner, the better. Please go ahead and schedule it, Doctor.”
“Alright, go ahead and complete the admission procedures.
Cidi had already rushed into the room to hug Lily. Both of them tactfully avoided talking about the near–miss. Cici pulled vibrant candies from her pocket and thrust them at Lily, her eyes shining. “Mommy, eat this so the medicine won’t be so bitter.

“Thank you, Cici,” Lily said, kissing her cheek and holding the little girl close. “Baby. I’m going in for surgery soon. We may not see each other for a bit.”
“It’s okay, Mommy. I’m not scared. Uncle Louis said that after this surgery, you’ll always be with me.” Cici snuggled up to her, smiling. “Mommy, don’t be afraid either. Uncle Louis and I are waiting for you!”
Her words softened Lily’s heart. Stroking her daughter’s soft hair, she smiled. “Alright, I will listen to you.”
Lily felt deeply indebted to the two of them.
Once, she had been consumed by a desire to die, disregarding Louis’s warm affection. It was only when Cici came into her life that she managed to pull herself from the abyss of death to notice the world around her.
She found her own ray of light in the caring and mature Cici and the silent yet devoted Louis. They were her rare and precious treasures.
Thinking of Michael only brought her calm now.
Lily knew her best friend well, enough to understand Jessica would never blame or despise her as her family did, but the gut wrenching guilt remained unresolved. If death were the only way to
atone, she had already paid that price.
Like that day when Louis saved her from the icy water, his desperate tears melting her frozen heart, her will to live was fragile. Yet Louis had shouted, “Even if you don’t want to live! You must stay alive! Your life is yours and mine now! You can’t die!”
Now, her soul’s other half belonged to Louis.
Lily thought that even if Michael came now, demanding she atone for Jessica, she would no longer choose death.
Lily’s surgery was scheduled for the weekend. Louis took Cici to stay temporarily at Lucy’s house. The little girl clenched her tiny fist resolutely. “Mommy, I’ll wait for you to come back!”
“Alright, Cici” Lily lovingly kissed her cheek. “After the surgery, I’ll take you to the amusement park.
“Uncle Louis has t to come tool”
“No problem.” Lily waved as she watched Louis secure Cici into the child seat. “Drive safely.”
Though she appeared calm, her heart was inevitably nervous. Three years ago, Lily could never have imagined she’d now want to live.
She had Cici and Louis. Nothing could defeat her.
