Chapter 10 Rumors

Three years later, in Crownspire, the city was alive with celebrations for Werewolf Independence Day.
On the grand stage, the Alpha King delivered his speech, surrounded by powerful Alphas from various packs. Yet, the most striking person remained Michael.
Rumors swirled that the Alpha of the Bluemoon Pack was poised to become the next Alpha King.
Pack
Over the past three years, Michael had grown from a promising young leader into a formidable strategist.
Within a year, he revolutionized his pack’s business, making Bluemoon wealthier than any other pack at the event.
“Do you know why Alpha Michael suddenly shifted his pack’s business direction?” Sam, a werewolf tasked with maintaining order, whispered excitedly to his companion.
Lucy, a young female werewolf attending the event with big shots for the first time, perked up at the rare piece of gossip.
Lowering his voice, Sam continued, “You won’t believe this, but three years ago, Michael abandoned his Luna on Harvest Day -the very day he was supposed to introduce her to the pack–and ran off!
“After that, he rewrote the pack’s laws, expanded trade partnerships, and restructured Bluemoon’s entire economy. That’s how he built the empire we see today”
“You’re joking!” Lucy gasped, covering her mouth. “Who would leave their mate on such an important day? Shouldn’t the Moon Goddess have punished him? And yet, he’s being considered for Alpha King? Tell me more. Don’t keep me hanging”
Sam smirked. “Well, here’s the thing his chosen Luna wasn’t his destined mate. People who were there say he got a phone call and took off. I guess something happened to his real mate. Instead of marrying for love, he settled for a political match- only to receive tragic news on the day of the celebration. How dramatic!”
Lucy’s face paled as she realized who was standing behind them. She frantically tugged at Sam’s sleeve, but he was too caught up in his storytelling.
“What? Don’t wrinkle ray suit! It’s expensive!” he complained.
“G–Greetings, Alpha Michael.” Lucy bowed her head, her heart pounding as she feared for her life. “Is there something you need?”
She had no idea how long Michael had been standing behind them, listening. His sharp features and deep–set black eyes gave him an imposing presence, his expression unreadable.
“Where is the restroom?”
Sam, whose legs were shaking, finally turned around. He struggled to force a smile, but his lips twitched as if he had lost control of his muscles. A–Alpha Michael, this way. Please follow me.
But the outburst they had expected from Michael never came..
With the still–trembling Sam leading the way, Michael stepped into the restroom.
Sam, stiff as a board, remained outside, dreading whatever was to come.
When Michael emerged, he merely glanced at Sam and said, “You were right.”
“Huh?”
It took Sam a second to process the words.
Michael clarified, “My destined mate is dead.”
The simple statement hit like a bolt of lightning.

Michael casually added, “You seem to have a knack for information. Being a low–level officer here is a waste of your skills. Want to join the Bluemoon Pack?”
Sam froze, unsure if it was a serious offer or some kind of sarcastic remark.
But then, a pale, slender hand extended toward him, holding a business card. Michael’s name was boldly printed across it.
“Bring the girl you were talking to
Sam was too stunned to believe what was happening. He had only been gossiping–how had that turned into a job offer?
His hands trembled as he watched Michael, cold and commanding, return to the stage. In disbelief, he pinched himself.
“I must be dreaming,” he muttered. “Or maybe Alpha Michael just wants to lure me in before killing me. But do I want to stay a low–ranking officer forever? Screw it, I’m going!”
He quickly found Lucy and explained everything. Her reaction was just as shocked as his. Even after the banquet was over, they were both jittery.
“Sam” Lucy said, her expression tense. “I heard more gossip about Alpha Michael. Want to hear it?”
She went on. The Bluemoon Pack’s biggest business right now is pharmaceuticals. Alpha Michael’s mate died from wolfsbane poisoning, so he started focusing on medical research. That’s why his business is thriving. Since he thinks you have good information sources, he might recruit you as a sales rep.”
Sam raised an eyebrow, “And what about you? Why did he invite you?”
“Maybe because I’m pretty?”
It wasn’t an unreasonable guess. Lucy was beautiful, and as an Omega, she was naturally seen as vulnerable.
A realization hit Sam
“He won’t ask you to be his mistress, will he?”
That unsettling thought lingered as they arrived at Michael’s pharmaceutical company.
The building’s sign read: Miss Lily Pharmaceuticals. Lucy immediately guessed that Lily‘ must have been the name of the woman Michael had lost.
Hoiding Michael’s business card, they were escorted inside without delay. The receptionist studied Lucy’s face before smiling. “Alpha is expecting you upstairs.”
She was stunning. Sam glanced between her and Lucy, frowning. “Lucy, don’t you think she kind of looks like you?”
“Huh?” Lucy pulled out her phone, using its black screen as a mirror. After checking a few times, she hesitated. “Yeah, a little. Especially the eyes.”
It wasn’t until they stepped into Michael’s office that they realized–both the receptionist and Lucy resembled the same
person.
