Can’t Bear Your Tough Love 5

Chapter 5

Jeremy had barely stepped into the hospital hallway when he overheard a nurse teasing, “Ms. Haskin, that gentleman taking care of you is so sweet-is he your boyfriend?”

Kendra giggled, not denying it. “Jeremy’s always been good to me.”

He’d grown

used to these suggestive exchanges, well aware of Kendra’s ambitions to climb higher.

But deep down, Jeremy knew he would only ever love one woman in his life-Aliana.

No matter how many times they divorced, he was certain they’d find their way back to each other.

“She must be over the moon now, heading to the courthouse to withdraw the divorce petition,” Jeremy thought to himself.

Just picturing Aliana’s delighted face as she canceled the divorce made a grin tug at his lips.

“Jeremy, you really came? What about Aliana… What if she actually divorces you?”

Kendra’s cheeks flushed as she feigned concern when he walked in, her tone laced with false worry.

He almost laughed at her clumsy attempt to fish for information-she was just looking for a chance to take Aliana’s place.

If she hadn’t been useful for provoking Aliana, Jeremy wouldn’t have spared her a second glance.

Now that the divorce petition was supposedly withdrawn, he’d lost interest in this whole “game.” His voice turned cold.

“The petition’s been withdrawn. We’re still married.”

Sure enough, Kendra’s expression flickered from shock to resentment before she managed to compose herself.

“So Aliana begged you again, didn’t she? You’re too soft-hearted, that’s your only flaw.”

He didn’t bother to respond, his eyes drifting over the hospital bed-she was clearly almost fully recovered.

He’d much rather be with Aliana, just to see her happy.

Every time she withdrew a petition before, she would clumsily cook a full meal, her nervous, unguarded affection al- ways drawing him in.

“I’m heading back. Get some rest,” he said, turning to leave.

Seeing this, Kendra forgot all about pretending to be injured and hurried off the bed.

“Jeremy!

“I’ll come home with you, too. I want to check on Aliana.”

It was a flimsy excuse, and he knew it.

He almost refused her.

It had been so long since he’d had a moment alone with Aliana-he missed her soft warmth, the way her eyes looked

at him like a startled deer.

But then he thought, if he got too close right after canceling the divorce, she might let her guard down. Better to bring Kendra back, keep Aliana on her toes.

And later, he’d find a way to send Kendra packing.

So, he silently allowed her to follow.

When she tried to take the front seat, he sent her to the back without a word.

As soon as they pulled up to the house, Jeremy barely waited for the car to stop before striding to the front door.

He pushed it open-

But the sight he expected-a table full of food, the woman in an apron, her eager smile-was nowhere to be found.

The living room was empty, cold as a punchline.
