Chapter 17
The divorce papers hadn’t taken effect in the end. Flora was a newlywed–only a day into her marriage. If such a scandal broke out now, it would be like the sky falling for the Sterling family.
So when Mr. Sterling learned of it, he ordered Ethan to stay at home and take care of Flora until she recovered. Even if he wanted to divorce, he had to wait until the scandal blew over. The Sterling family’s reputation could not be ruined.
No matter how unwilling or anxious Ethan was, he couldn’t defy Mr. Sterling.
Several doctors were brought to Sterling castle to treat Flora. Thankfully, despite the heavy bleeding, she was not seriously injured and would recover with rest.
After just three days, Flora woke. Ethan sat expressionless by her bedside. She gave a weak smile.
“My love, thank you for taking care of me. From now on, I’ll take good care of you and manage Sterling castle well.”
She thought Ethan had calmed down and hoped to pretend nothing had happened. But the man’s eyes remained cold and indifferent.
“When you’ve fully recovered, I’ll go to Chancellor castle and make the divorce official. I, Ethan, won’t give up easily.”
Flora was stunned by his words. She realized Ethan was determined to send her away. Her lip trembled and her eyes reddened.
“Ethan, am I really not worth even a fraction of Lena? We were so happy in our past life–why have you changed in this one?”
Ethan was taken aback. He understood she was recalling their past life, but his expression quickly returned to calm, a sarcastic smile tugging at his lips.
“In our past life, weren’t we together only because you hid the truth about the Flamenco dance? I was married to Lena for a year, our marriage harmonious. It was you who came to me, seduced me, and made me fake my death so we could run away together. If not for that, I should have lived happily with Lena till old age.”
Flora couldn’t accept this. After hitting the pillar, she remembered that past life–without Lena’s interference, she and Ethan had spent half a lifetime happily together. But now, even though they had finally married openly, Ethan was demanding a divorce after just one day, his heart clearly with Lena.
How could she ever accept such a difference? Her eyes were red and swollen, full of grievances. Her voice softened as she asked,
“Ethan, be honest with yourself. Do you only love the person who danced Flamenco? If that person wasn’t me, not Lena, but someone else, would you still love them? We were together for so many years in our past life–I don’t believe you had no feelings for me. You love me, don’t you?”
She deliberately lowered her tone, knowing Ethan had always loved her gentle, delicate side.
But she forgot that times had changed. The Ethan of the past life already got her and naturally didn’t cherish her. The Ethan of this life had been abandoned by Lena and so wanted to hold her close.
He lowered his eyes, memories of Lena’s every smile flooding his mind. She always sought him out, bringing expensive gifts, tirelessly following him like an adorable little shadow.
How could he not love her? How could he give her up for Flora?
A reminiscent smile curved his lips as he answered her question right in front of her eyes.
“The one I love has always been Lena. You just used despicable means to deceive me.”
Flora, leaning weakly against the bed, could no longer pretend to be tender. She gripped the sheet tightly, her eyes full of resentment.
“You say I lied to you, but what did I ever lie about in our past life? Except for the Flamenco dance, did I ever deceive you? You thought Lena was boring and wanted excitement, so you agreed to elope with me! The fake death was your own plan!”
“As for this life, weren’t the things I did all because you didn’t trust Lena? You say I lied, but those things happened because you indulged your doubts. You didn’t care about her or believe her! You say you love Lena, but it’s just because you hate the poor life we had

before and now want to enjoy the prince’s riches!”
Ethan’s gaze darkened and he slapped her sharply.
“Nonsense!”
Flora’s wounds hadn’t healed yet and she now bled from the corner of her mouth. She knew she couldn’t win back Ethan’s heart, so she
covered her face and laughed through her tears, crying out in accusation.
“Nonsense? Ethan, you know better than anyone!”
