Hearing this, Hock Lee immediately called for an ambulance
He only seemed to relax after watching me being wheeled into the operating room.
I woke up after the surgery to a commotion.
The four–bed hospital room was packed. Seeing that I was awake, a nurse came over with the bill, urging me to settle the hospital bill quickly.
I dragged my weakened body, inching my way towards the payment counter.
As I passed the pediatric clinic, I heard Hock Lee’s voice.
“Use the best medicine. Money’s no object.”
My heart leaped into my throat. I thought something had happened to my baby.
But when I peeked through the crack in the door, I saw Yulia Jones and her child, Cheney.
They were decked out in limited–edition, high–end luxury clothes, while my baby was born wearing rough, scratchy fabrics.
The coarse material had even chafed their delicate skin red.
A bitter smile twisted my lips. I didn’t know what I was still hoping for.
Hock Lee was still gently coaxing Cheney to get his shot.
I turned around and paid the hospital bill with what little money I had left.
When I got back to the hospital room with the baby, Hock Lee was already there waiting.
He frowned, looking both pained and, even more so, annoyed.
“You just gave birth. Why are you running around with him like that?”
He was completely different from how he’d been with Yulia Jones just moments ago.
It reminded me of when I first got pregnant; Hock Lee acted exactly like this.
He said, coldly and darkly, “Get rid of it. We don’t have the money to raise another child.”
I thought he was genuinely worried about not being able to afford to raise our child, so l worked myself to the bone to earn money.
At work, I did insane amounts of overtime, and then I took on part–time jobs after hours. Even after starting my maternity leave, I took on cleaning jobs.
Now I realize it was all because he was afraid my child would compete with Yulia Jones and Cheney for his fortune.
I pretended I didn’t know anything and just lay there in the hospital bed.
I looked up at Hock Lee.
“Have you thought about what name we should give the baby?”

Hock Lee paused, then said coldly.
“No, I haven’t.”
Hearing that, I just laughed.

I saw it with my own eyes: when Yulia Jones asked for baby name suggestions on Ins, Hock Lee spent three days and nights poring over ancient poetry books to choose the perfect one.
But when it’s my baby, he hasn’t even given it a thought.
I forced a smile and messaged my lawyer to prepare the divorce papers.
