At the police station, a female officer gave
me a cup of hot water and asked me what
happened.
I told her everything, from beginning to end.
<
Just then, my phone buzzed. It was a
notification for Declan’s new social media
post.
He’d announced his wedding date with
Noelle. They were already taking engagement photos.
My throat tightened. It felt like a heavy stone was crushing my chest, making it hard to
breathe.
Declan probably thought he was so clever,
conning me out of my youth, getting a free
maid and caretaker.
But he never considered that I did all those
things because I loved him.
The bald man eventually got a year in jail.
My story blew up online. Some people
sympathized with me. Others said I deserved it, that I must have been trying to seduce the bald guy.
I didn’t want to explain anything. I just wanted to get away from this place that held so much
pain.
I called my mom, who lived overseas.
“Mom, you were right about him. I want to
come home.”
Years ago, I’d had a huge fight with my mom
because she didn’t want me to be with
Declan.
She’d said, “Never get involved with a poor
“Because he’ll show you he’s not just broke,
he’s got no heart either.”
Now, every word she’d said had come true.
My mom immediately bought me a plane
ticket.
The day I was leaving, I got a call from
Declan.
Chapter 2
“Noelle suddenly can’t move her lower body.
Do you know why?”
“Declan, I never want to see your face again.”
“Loving you is the biggest regret of my life.”

Declan’s heart skipped a beat when he heard
that.
He couldn’t quite believe Sierra would say
such a thing.
After all, Sierra had been his devoted
doormat, following him around for seven
years without a single complaint.
When Noelle suddenly couldn’t move her legs,
he’d called Sierra immediately, mostly to fish
for information about how she was doing.
He’d seen her being assaulted that day.
He hadn’t stepped in because he knew that
bald guy was bad news.
Now, a part of him regretted it. If he’d helped
<
her, maybe those humiliating videos wouldn’t
be all over the internet.
Sierra’s words just now sent a shiver of
unease through him.
It felt like she was saying goodbye for good.
He frantically called Sierra’s friends, asking
where she’d gone.
The answer was a slap in the face: “Sierra’s
left. You scumbag, after cheating her for
seven years, why are you even asking!”
Declan’s stomach dropped.
Left?
Where did she go?
How could she just leave?
She used to love him so much.
Declan wanted to ask more, but they hung up
on him.
After a long while, he decided to push it out
of his mind.
It was over between him and Sierra, after all.
But he had no idea how much he would come
to regret everything he’d done.
