Chapter 5
Adam flipped through the old evidence page by page.
His face darkened with each turn…
When I woke up again, I was weak to the point of exhaustion.
“Darling, you’re finally awake!”
I turned my head, and there Adam was, looking at me with surprise and joy as he stood by my bedside.
He seemed eager to embrace me, but then hesitated, carefully reaching out to hold my hand instead.
I immediately pulled away
“What’s the matter? Not happy that I’m still alive? Or do you just want to take your anger out on me for Carla’s sake?”
I said, my tone cold.
Adam’s face stiffened, his eyes filled with deep regret.
“Darling, please don’t be so cold towards me. I know you’re upset, go ahead, scold me if you need to. Are you hungry? Thirsty? Is there anything wrong?
To be honest, just seeing him made me uncomfortable.
He stood up to pour
pour me some water.
I frowned in disgust. “Stop pretending, Adam. Let’s break the mate bond.
His hand trembled as he poured, the scalding water spilling onto the back of his hand.
He rushed over, his eyes bloodshot. “No, darling, don’t break the mate bond.”
“I know you can’t have children anymore, but don’t worry, I’ll never leave you because of that. I used to be a doctor too, so believe me, I can fix you.”
“Yes, you understand medicine too, so you should know that my injury wasn’t supposed to be this bad.”
I turned to look at him, and Adam’s face instantly turned pale.
Before he could find a way to respond, Carla barged in, her voice whining as she complained to him.
“Adam? Why are you still here? Didn’t we agree you’d buy me jewelry today as compensation? Hurry up, let’s go.”
When Adam ignored her, she holding her already–healed arm and began to act like a spoiled child.
“Adam, my arm still hurts so much. You have to buy me a huge diamond ring today, or I won’t forgive you.”
Adam gritted his teeth. “Carla, how dare you still come here?”
“The Pack enforcers told me the person causing the disturbance wasn’t hired, but was after you. You made a mistake in surgery and killed his mate. That luute was supposed to be for you.”
“Carla, he was your patient’s family member, and you must’ve seen him before.”
“Why did you lie to me and make me misunderstand Laura?”
Carla froze for a moment, blinking innocently.
“How would I know it was like that? Besides, I’ve been seriously hurt. I came to find you, and you ignored me and even scolded me. Be careful, I might stop talking to you.”
With that, she walked over to my bedside, and upon seeing my flat stomach, she smiled.

“Oh, Laura, so you really were hurt. Why didn’t you tell me? You’ve caused me to be misunderstood. That’s on you.”
Adam shot her a cold look and raised his hand, slapping her across the face with force.
“You wicked woman, get out of here. You’re only making things worse for my wife.”
Carla looked at him in disbelief. “Adam, you hit me for her?”
“Hmph, don’t think I’ll ever pay attention to you again.”
With that, she stomped off, clutching her face in grievance.
Adam turned back to me, his demeanor softening as he looked for ways to please me. He was about to say something, but I interrupted him.
“Carla is lying, no doubt, but don’t forget, without your help, that knife wouldn’t have ended up in my stomach.”
For the first time, Adam, the one who had always acted superior in front of me, seemed at a loss.
“Darling, please don’t do this. I’m scared when you look at me like that.”
“It was all because of that wretched woman, Carla. I wasn’t trying to hurt you. Let me make it right, okay?”
I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly.
Before, he wanted to make it right for Carla. Now he wanted to make it right for me.
But unlike her, I didn’t need it.
