In the back seat of the taxi, I leaned against Lam’s shoulder.
I really was cold, so I clung tightly to his coat, my fingers playing with the veins running along the back of his hand.
“Does it still hurt?” he asked, his voice steady but laced with worry.
“We’re almost there.”
He was worried that the fever might’ve fried my brain.
I wanted to tell him I was fine.
Actually, I wasn’t sick at all. I’d done this on purpose.
But I didn’t dare imagine what Liam’s face would look like if he found out the truth.
When we arrived at the hospital, Liam rushed me into the ER, holding me like I was the most fragile thing in the world.
He set me down gently in one of the chairs in the IV area, adjusting my coat and straightening my collar. Then he crouched in front of me, his voice soft.
“Stay here, sweetheart. I’ll go pay the bill. I’ll be right back.”
“Be good, okay? Once the IV is done, you’ll feel better.”
I buried half my face in his coat, peeking out with just my eyes, and nodded.
He smiled faintly, ruffled my hair, and leaned in to kiss the corner of my mouth before hurrying off.
I watched him disappear down the hallway.
He really couldn’t wait to get back to me.

But…
I slipped off his coat, left it on the chair, and walked out into the cold, empty night.
