I couldn’t listen to him go on. I reached out to cradle the back of his neck and hushed him, gently patting his head in comfort. I didn’t even know why, but seeing him like this made me feel like I really had been wrong.
The doctor came in after hearing the commotion and reminded us, “The patient just regained consciousness. Please help him stay calm.”
“That one line was all Nathan needed to latch on to. He insisted I stay with him in the ward as his caretaker. “If you’re not here with me, I can’t stop thinking you’ll leave again. The doctor said I have to rest properly if I want to recover faster.”
“Sierra was unaware of the entire Genevieve situation. She thought we were just fighting and was thrilled at the idea of my staying. She practically applauded it.”
“But what made me cave in wasn’t her. It was Nathan’s parents.”
They were just too kind. When they looked at me and pleaded, I simply didn’t have the heart to refuse.
Once the elders left, Nathan got even bolder. He treated me like his personal maid–demanding massages for his sore arms and aching legs.
By the end of the afternoon, I was so exhausted I could barely speak.
The VIP ward had a separate bed for caregivers. After getting Nathan settled in for the night, I collapsed onto the other bed and nearly fell asleep.
“Why are you sleeping over there? My bed isn’t wide enough for two?”

289 Vouchers
I ignored his nonsense, eyelids drooping, and soon drifted into a dream.
But in the middle of the night, I felt like I was trapped in a furnace–heat radiating from every direction, making me uncomfortable.
Half–asleep, I kicked off the covers–only to accidentally hit Nathan’s wound. The sharp hiss he let out jolted me fully awake.
I immediately stilled, afraid of hurting him more. I nestled into his arms and asked in a panic, “What are you doing here? Didn’t the doctor say not to get out of bed?”
He frowned and pouted, looking pitiful. “I’ve never slept apart from you before. I can’t sleep without you, okay?”
“Something hit me right in the heart. Over the years, we had fought and even had some silent wars.
Once, during a particularly bad fight, I snuck off to sleep in the guest room. Even then, he had crept in after me in the middle of the night.
“We’re a couple–we fight, we make up. But you? You went and removed the whole bed.
Nathan rubbed his chin on the top of my head.
“Please don’t leave without a word again. Even if you’re mad at me, at least let me know you’re safe. Adeline, whether you believe it or not, I do really love you.”
He lifted my right hand and intertwined our fingers. I didn’t know if he was talking in his sleep or what, but something inside me began to burn.
After that night, things between us shifted. We were suddenly back to how things used to be.
But there was still something different–he had become even more clingy
