Chapter 23
Seeing Estelle about to be strangled by Marisa, Calista quickly rushed forward to pull Marisa away. The prison guards outside also rushed in and separated the two.
“Calm down, Marisa, calm down!”
It’s really not worth it to ruin the rest of your life for someone like that!
After finally being pulled apart by Calista and a few prison guards, Marisa and Estelle were finally separated.
At the moment when Marisa let go, Estelle immediately collapsed to the ground, her face turning pale as if she was about to faint. The prison guard was so scared that he quickly rang the bell for the doctor while also hurriedly asking Marisa and Calista to leave.
Calista was the last one to leave, and just as she was about to go, Estelle suddenly called out to her.
“Calista, I’m sorry for what happened in the past, but I also advise you to stay away from him, don’t be soft–hearted.”
Calista hesitated for a moment, then walked out of the small room without looking back.
And on the chair outside, Marisa had already cried her eyes out.
At this moment, Marisa also finally shed her strong facade, crying like an ordinary mother about her son’s tragic fate.
“Such a sin…”
Calista also didn’t know how to speak up, so she could only sit silently next to Marisa, patting her back to give her silent comfort.
When Calista and Marisa got back into the car, they received a call from the hospital saying that Eric had woken up.
Marisa hung up the phone and turned to look at Calista after a while, her words filled with a tentative and cautious plea.
“Did you go to the hospital to see him?”
When Marisa said this, she didn’t have much hope in her heart, after all, the things her son did to Calista, it was already good enough that Calista didn’t laugh at him for deserving it.
Looking into Marisa’s hopeful eyes, Calista thought it was the perfect opportunity to clear the air, after all, they might not see each other again in the future.
Not to mention this was the first time Marisa had asked herself, and she didn’t want to hurt Marisa’s heart again.
When Calista and Marisa arrived at Eric’s ward, they saw him half- leaning on the hospital bed.
Marisa exchanged pleasantries with Eric, making sure to tell him to rest well and not to overthink, before leaving the room to Calista and Eric.
There was no mention of Eric being poisoned throughout the entire journey.
After Marisa left, Eric said, “I know what I was poisoned with.”
Calista was taken aback and looked at him in surprise.
How did he know?
Eric chuckled self–deprecatingly.
“Two years ago when we started sleeping together, she inexplicably started making soup for me, and she would watch me finish it every time. At first, I didn’t pay much attention to it, until six months later when I went for a physical examination. The doctor pointed out that there was something wrong with my body, but further tests were needed to determine the exact condition. She was by my side at that time and quickly changed her expression, scolding the doctor. The follow–up examination was interrupted like that, and I didn’t think much of it. After that, she gradually stopped making soup for me.
“And when I was having the surgery, I also vaguely heard some words, plus the expressions on your and my mom’s faces, I also guessed what was going on. So I guess I deserved it.”
“I was originally thinking about winning you back, but now it’s impossible.”
At last, Eric chuckled self–deprecatingly.
Calista also didn’t know what to say, as if nothing was worth mentioning in the face of death.
Not to mention, they both knew it in their hearts.
They had no possibility at all.
Eric didn’t mind either, but suddenly he spoke up: “By the way, can you accompany me to a place?”
When they arrived at the destination mentioned by Eric, Calista finally realized that they had come to a cemetery.
She didn’t know what he was going to do, so she just followed him. quietly and watched his actions silently.

Calista watched as Eric bought two bouquets of chrysanthemums and some joss paper from the hall on the side of the cemetery, then carried these items up the hill towards the cluster of tombstones.
Calista also quietly followed behind him.
When they arrived, it was still early in the morning, and the only people in the cemetery were the workers on duty and the two of them.
Apart from the sound of footsteps hitting the ground, there was only the sound of each other’s breathing.
After walking for who knows how long, Eric finally stopped and stood in front of a tombstone. Calista looked ahead and realized that it was the tombstone where her parents were buried together.
