Chapter 21
Calista never imagined that her reunion with Marisa would be like this.
In the quiet corridor of the hospital, Calista looked at the competent and shrewd Marisa in front of her, unsure of how to speak for a moment.
It was actually Marisa who noticed Calista’s nervousness and spoke up first.
“Calista, I would like to apologize on behalf of my son and myself. I did not teach him well.”
At that time, Marisa was solely focused on keeping that woman Estelle out, but she overlooked Calista.
After she had time to investigate the situation with Eric and Calista, she found out that her son had actually done so many ridiculous things.
Not only did he conceal the truth that Estelle was a barren woman, but he also used Calista’s father’s medical expenses to pressure Calista into having a child for him.
Even when Estelle deliberately hurt Calista every time, he just watched coldly.
After reading Calista’s information, Marisa felt both heartbroken and angry.
She felt sorry for Calista, who was so young yet forced into such a situation by her own son, and she was angry at her son for not taking responsibility.
In the end, it was Marisa who didn’t educate herself well.
Since Landyn passed away many years ago, Marisa’s focus shifted from Eric to the company, where she has been working in France for years.
In just a few years, Eric gradually became paranoid and crazy under Estelle’s influence, and in his eyes, anything that could be solved with money was not a problem.
Marisa did consider bringing him back, but now her son is grown up and she is unable to do so.
Seeing Eric change like this for a woman, Marisa initially wanted to give up on him and start grooming a successor.
But Eric later fell seriously ill again because of Estelle’s imprisonment, and when he recovered, he seemed to have reverted to his former self, giving Marisa hope.
Calista looked at Marisa in front of her and suddenly felt a bit sorry for her.
It wasn’t her fault in the first place, but in the end, Marisa had to come and clean up the mess.
In Calista’s memory, Marisa was the kindest person in the Callahan family to her.
Every time her father was too busy to pick her up and bring her home, Marisa would always invite her to stay and have dinner together.
Sometimes, when it got late, Marisa would still let her stay at the Callahan family’s house.
Although Calista was the daughter of the Callahan family’s driver, she also had her own room in the Callahan family’s house.
It was precisely because she lived close to the Callahan family that she knew Marisa so well.

Marisa’s marriage can be described as extremely rocky.
In the first half of his life, Landyn cheated and died, and in the second half, his only son did such a ridiculous thing again.
Although her makeup was meticulously done, it still couldn’t hide the exhaustion seeping from deep within her bones.
Just then, the door of the operating room was finally opened.
What came out was not Eric’s mobile bed, but a doctor, a doctor with an extremely serious look.
He walked up to Marisa, hesitated to speak, and first glanced at Calista beside her.
Calista knew she couldn’t listen to what was coming next, so she had to avoid suspicion first.
Marisa shook her head at the doctor and said, “It’s okay, there’s no one else here, you can just tell me.”
The doctor opened his mouth and spoke the most serious words in the gentlest language.
“Madam Callahan, please be prepared, Mr. Callahan has been poisoned with a slow–acting poison, he may…”
The doctor had not finished speaking when Marisa suddenly clutched her heart, closed her eyes, and fell backwards.
“Madam Callahan!”
“Marisa!”
The attending doctor and Calista were frightened and quickly went to support Marisa, helping her to sit down on a nearby chair.
Calista soothed Marisa’s chest again and fed her medicine. Only then did Marisa slowly regain consciousness, visibly aging a lot.
Marisa first thanked Calista before continuing to look at the attending physician in front of her.
“How much time did he have left?”
The attending physician paused for a moment before continuing, “It will depend on the follow–up treatment.”
According to the report, it is estimated that he was poisoned starting from two years ago. Due to the small dosage and the fact that it is a chronic poison, it was discovered relatively late. We will do our best to save him, but as for the timing, it will depend on luck.”
In just a few words, Marisa and Calista took a long time to digest, and in the end, Marisa asked the doctor to keep the secret and not let Eric know.
The doctor nodded and then turned around to leave, and the corridor once again became quiet.
No one spoke again.
Calista was more complex than Marisa in terms of grief.
After all, she had never imagined that Eric would die one day.
She did hate Eric, but Eric had saved her father’s life.
She didn’t really want him to die.
