Chapter 32: He Couldn’t Let Go
Evelyn had completely severed ties with the Hamilton family.
During her leave, her apartment overflowed with gifts. Colleagues, friends, even her ex-mother-in-law Margaret had sent care packages.
Alexander’s gifts were the most excessive. When Vivian opened the door, a towering stack of gift boxes nearly toppled onto her.
“These are all high-end,” Vivian remarked, flipping through the items. “Some aren’t even available domestically. What should we do with them?”
“Return them.”
“Even Margaret’s?”
“Yes.” Evelyn’s voice softened. “I’ll buy some age-appropriate supplements to send back to her.”
Vivian raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further.
Evelyn had her reasons. Margaret had treated her like a daughter, and she cherished that bond. But she refused to keep anything from the Hamiltons. A blunt return would hurt the older woman, so she chose to express gratitude in her own way.
The deliveryman arrived as Vivian lounged on the couch scrolling through her phone.
She suddenly snorted in derision.
Evelyn glanced up from studying real estate listings. “What’s wrong?”
“Nathan York,” Vivian growled through clenched teeth. “Just messaged me out of nowhere.”
Evelyn shook her head. Their social circles barely overlapped—she knew little about the youngest York heir.
“The Yorks collaborate with Hamilton Group,” Vivian said with a dismissive wave. “Haven’t spoken in years, and now he’s sending me a screenshot of my own social media post.”
Evelyn frowned. “Wrong recipient?”
“Probably meant to send it to Alexander.” Vivian shook her phone. “Did you block him?”
“Yes.”
The day Alexander reverted to his cloud avatar, Evelyn had deleted him without hesitation.
“Figures.” Vivian smirked. “Now he’s reduced to stalking you through my feed. Classic Nathan—screws up even that.”
Evelyn returned to her property research. “Or maybe someone has a crush on you.”
Vivian rolled her eyes. “Then why panic-delete the message?”
Minutes later, she thrust her phone forward. “See for yourself.”
The chat log showed Nathan’s awkward greeting after the deleted screenshot.
Vivian cackled. “Worst cover story ever.”
Evelyn focused on her tablet’s real estate data. Buying a home required thorough research.
“Evelyn.” Vivian rested a hand on her shoulder. “Alexander… he still cares about you.”
A faint smile touched Evelyn’s lips. “That ‘care’ changes nothing. Time will fade it all.”
“But the baby—”
“Vivian,” Evelyn interrupted, “what exactly did you post earlier?”
“Just a handbag photo.” Vivian shrugged. “Nothing related to you.”
Evelyn nodded. “Post something new for me.”
“Sure.” Vivian winked. “Might as well use Nathan as our messenger pigeon.”
“Why?”
“I’ve signed the divorce papers.” Evelyn’s voice remained steady. “Two copies. Mailed them to him.”
Understanding dawned on Vivian’s face.
This was a silent nudge—a reminder for Alexander to sign and return them promptly.
“Got it.”
