I spent three years studying in England.
After three years, I finally returned to the States.
This time, I came back in style.
I got into the company of my dreams and became a senior executive.
When I went back to my hometown to see my parents, Lucas came looking for me again,
My mom sighed and said to me, “During these three years when you were away, Lucas often came to visit your dad and me. He seems to have really realized his mistakes. You’re not getting any younger, and you two were married before. I think you should at least talk things out with him. I’ve seen how much he’s changed in these three years. His memory has also returned…”
I understood what my mom meant, and she had a point. Simply blocking him wasn’t meaningful. I needed to have a final, clear conversation
with him.
Jasked my mom to open the door. Lucas’s eyes were dim, and he had lost a lot of weight.
The moment he saw me,
his
eyes flickered.
“Olivia… you’re back.”
“Mm, do you have something to say?” I replied coldly.
“Can’t I just come see you? We were in love once, we were married. I told you, once Chloe’s depression got better, I’d come find you.” Lucas explained.

“Can’t I just come see you? We were in love once, we were married. I told you, once Chloe’s depression got better, I’d come find you.” Lucas explained.
I looked at him with surprise. “Who gave you the courage to think I’m the kind of person you can throw away and pick up again whenever you want? I really don’t love you anymore.”
“I… I’m sorry. I remember everything I did to you these past three years. It was all my fault.” Lucas lowered his head.
“I accept your apology, but we still can’t go back.”
“If I hadn’t given Chloe special treatment back then, we probably wouldn’t have divorced, right?” Lucas mused to himself.
“What’s past is past. There’s no point in ‘what ifs‘. I wish you and Chloe happiness.”
After I finished speaking, Lucas stood at the door, staring at me silently. I noticed a red scar on his wrist that had scabbed over.
But I didn’t care. Whatever state he was in was his own business now.
After he left, I lay on my bed watching videos and playing games. There are so many things to be happy about in life. Why waste energy on emotional turmoil? How boring.
The next day, another unexpected visitor came to my house.
It was Chloe.

“Olivia, please, save Lucas. He can’t live without you.”
“For the sake of your three years of marriage, please help him, okay?”

“I promise you,
I’ll back off. I’ll never bother you again. Lucas is really a good man. I love him, and I can’t bear to see him suffer like this!”
“He’s been self–harming every day now. He’s developed severe anxiety. Only you can save him.”
I was stunned, looking at the pitiful Chloe. Then I laughed bitterly.
“If he’s sick, he should see a doctor! What, am I some magic cure–all? Will eating a piece of me grant him immortality or something?”
“First it was you who was

I watched Chloe flee in embarrassment, feeling amused. When kindness doesn’t work, you try to play hardball! If you two love being sick so much, if you’re so fragile, then I wish you scumbags a lifetime together!
Later, due to a job transfer, I moved to a different city.
Long after, by chance, I heard from a mutual friend of Lucas and mine.
Lucas’s anxiety had become severe. He couldn’t sleep night after night, and he wouldn’t let Chloe sleep either. As a result, Chloe had also developed anxiety.
Now these two “illness buddies” were both being treated at the First People’s Hospital.
It seemed they wouldn’t be getting better anytime soon.
I smiled wryly and said to my friend, “So you see, trash belongs in the trash heap. After all, I’m not in the business of picking up garbage.”
