The pink apron strings left deep indentations on his lower back, and the muscles on his back and abdomen rippled with his movements.
I didn’t know when my usually dull and uninteresting husband had become so open.
It was quite a feast for the eyes first thing in the morning. My displeasure at being left alone last night instantly dissipated.
I lowered my head, trying hard to suppress the corners of my mouth from flying up:
“Hey, Adrian, cooking dressed like that, you’ll end up with a couple of big blisters and learn your lesson, haha.”
Adrian: “…”
The atmosphere seemed a bit odd.
I quietly lifted my eyelids and saw the dark circles under his eyes: “Didn’t you sleep well last night?”
Adrian paused, then spoke without changing his expression: “No, I slept very well.”
I walked over and sat across from him: “Oh, by the way, that new intern at the company is treating us to dinner tonight, so I might be home late, or I might not come home at all, because there are some things…”
Adrian’s hand serving the porridge trembled, and the ceramic spoon suddenly hit the edge of the bowl, making a crisp “ding” sound.
After a moment of silence, he forced a stiff smile, squeezing out a sentence through gritted teeth:
“Alright, you… you have a delicate constitution, so don’t… don’t stay out too late at night!”
He agreed readily and didn’t ask anything, seeming not to care at all about who I was going out with or what I was doing.
I once again thought of yesterday’s suspicions and his coy behavior.
My chest instantly feit congested with pain.
I grabbed a couple of slices of bread and headed out.
As I reached the door, I remembered something and turned back.
Adrian’s back instantly straightened, his eyes suddenly brightening as he looked at me expectantly.
Without even glancing at him, I took off the ring on my ring finger and tossed it in front of him.
“I won’t wear this today, it’s not convenient…”
The sound of metal hitting the wooden table made Adrian’s pupils shake for a moment.
He tightly pursed his lips, staring intently at the ring, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists, veins bulging on his neck.
I stuffed all the documents on the coffee table into my bag and turned towards the door.
A second before closing the door.
I inexplicably looked back.
Isaw Adrian standing motionless in place, watching me leave.
Those eyes were terrifyingly dark.
As if suppressing some kind of storm.
Even after walking quite a distance.
I could still feel that gaze clinging tightly to me.
