Chapter 8

I thought that after saying all that, my relationship with Christopher would be completely over, and we’d never cross paths again.
But I never expected to receive another message from him just one month later.
[Olivia, I’m back, and I’m never leaving again.]
I was stunned, not understanding what Christopher meant by this.
I thought to myself: “Whether he comes back or not has nothing to do with me.”
[Can we meet up?]
I blocked his phone number again, pretending I’d misread the
message.
But sure enough, Christopher cornered me in the community again.
“Olivia.” Christopher approached me with a large bouquet of roses, thinking he was being romantic.
But I only felt disgusted, even nauseated.

I said, “Wasn’t I clear enough?”

Christopher smiled and shook his head: “You blamed me for wanting to come back to you without doing anything. I’ve now taken care of all my business in New York, and I’ll be working in Texas from now on. I’ll never leave again!”
He made his promises with such conviction.
I didn’t understand.
I said, “Let me say this one more time: whatever choices you make have nothing to do with me. Don’t involve me in your decisions. I’m doing just fine now. Why do you keep bothering me over and over again?”
“Because the person you truly love is me!” Christopher said with certainty.
“You only chose Scott because I left. You shouldn’t go against your heart!”
I laughed at my former self and at Christopher’s arrogance.
I said, “Christopher, love can disappear.”
Christopher looked hurt, probably not expecting me to be so indifferent toward him.
I said coldly, “You don’t love me. You just can’t accept that I’m

with another man, right?”
“No! That’s not it! Olivia, I truly love you. I only dated Madison out of curiosity. The person I’ve always loved is you!”
I felt even more disgusted.
I said, “You could waste a girl’s ten years of youth just because of momentary curiosity. Don’t you think that’s incredibly selfish?”
“I’m sorry.” Christopher hung his head.
“I’m sorry, Olivia. Can you forgive me just this once? I swear I’ll never disappoint you again.”
As he spoke, he actually pulled out a ring from his jacket–the ring he’d originally intended to give Madison.
Christopher said, “The reason I acted that way toward you at the reunion was because I wanted to start dating you again!”
I laughed.
He wanted to get back together with me, so he humiliated me first, making me beg for his forgiveness.
“Olivia, marry me. Let’s start over!” With that, Christopher got down on one knee and proposed to me, ignoring the bewildered stares of people around us.

Maybe I’d loved him too much in my past life, making him so confident that he believed I’d drop everything and marry him as long as he was willing.
“There’s no chance. Give up.” I rejected him coldly.
Christopher still tried to struggle: “Olivia, I really gave up opportunity in New York for you…”
the
“That was your choice, and it has nothing to do with me,” I interrupted him.
“You’re choosing to stay now not because of me, but because your parents are getting older and you have to stay here to take care of them. And Madison won’t stay with you, so you thought of me.” I analyzed calmly, even feeling like laughing.
I realized I truly didn’t care about Christopher at all anymore.
Even knowing that Christopher had impure motives, I wouldn’t feel any emotional turmoil like disappointment.
He wasn’t worth it.
I saw Scott watching us from a distance, knowing he was waiting for
- me.
He respected all my decisions and had enough confidence, because his love for me far exceeded Christopher’s feelings for me.

“Let’s go, darling.”
Scott walked over and gently embraced me.
I nodded, no longer looking at Christopher.
Christopher knelt on the ground in despair, not getting up for a long time.
After that day, Scott and I immediately moved and changed all our contact information.
I wouldn’t give Christopher any more chances to approach me.
Months later, I gave birth to a daughter.
Half a year later, Scott threw me a grand wedding ceremony, inviting all our family and friends.
At the wedding, I heard news about Christopher again from my high school classmates.
Christopher’s mother had passed away.
Christopher held a memorial service at the church and left the city a month later.
But I just listened to this news without feeling much.

After the wedding, while going through the gifts from guests, I found a white envelope with my name on it.
I opened the envelope and saw Christopher’s name written inside.
Besides a check, there was also a ring in the envelope.
“What are you looking at, darling?” Scott walked over curiously.
I casually tossed the ring into the trash can, turned around with a smile and said, “Nothing.”
Scott said, “It’s getting late. Come to bed.”
