Chapter 5
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, startling everyone present
People immediately scattered in panic, scrambling to find a place to hide. While everyone was distracted, I seized the chance to run in the opposite direction.
Someone spotted me escaping. Remembering the orders from above, they still tried to catch me.
Just as he was about to reach me, another gunshot echoed through the air.
“Stop!”
As the second shot rang out, a group of people appeared in the distance.
“Miss!”
The familiar voice made my eyes widen in shock. I tumed around and saw Jalen.
He was holding a gun, still aimed at the man who had tried to grab me. Without hesitation, Jalen shot him in the leg.
Clad in a black suit, he looked stern and intimidating. The men beside him quickly moved in and surrounded me protectively. “Jalen! Is it really you?“”
He rushed over, examining me from head to toe in panic. Once he confirmed I was unharmed, he pulled me into a tight embrace.M “Where have you been? Why weren’t you by my side all these years?“D
Tears streamed down my cheeks. Jalen had been my bodyguard since I was little, and in my heart, he was already family. “Miss, it’s all my fault. I swear I won’t leave you again.“>
His voice was firm with conviction. Then he turned and strode toward the group of kidnappers that his men had subdued. “Was it you who hit her with a stick?”
Jalen sneered coldly. His men immediately pinned the man to the ground. Jalen stepped hard on the man’s hand.
Cries of pain and pleas for mercy echoed, but Jalen didn’t stop. Only when the man’s hand was a bloody mess did Jalen lift his foot. He waved his hand casually. “Take them all away and investigate thoroughly.”
The Jalen in front of me didn’t seem like the same person I once knew.
He used to be just my quiet little bodyguard. He would still protect me like this, but he was never this furious before.
And there was something else…}
I tried to recall more memories of Jalen, but a sharp pain shot through the back of my head.
“Miss, I’ve been investigating everything that has happened to you,” he said solemnly.”
“I thought you genuinely loved Rowen. If I’d known he’d treat you like this, I never would’ve left your side.“}]
His voice was full of regret.”
I opened my mouth to respond, but my vision suddenly went black, and my body collapsed.}]
At the corner of my sight, I saw Jalen catch me in a panic.
As I looked at his face, memories rushed back more clearly.”
Tremembered–it was Jalen who left without a word.”
After that night between me and Rowen, I was terrified. I’d always liked Jalen, and I didn’t know how to face him after what happened. Rowen seemed understanding at the time.
“Miss Webber, we were both set up tonight. But I’ll take responsibility for what happened.“!
He sounded sincere, but I was overwhelmed with anxiety.”
I started avoiding Jalen, unable to tell him what had happened. Rowen kept my secret too, saying nothing about that night.
I felt so grateful to him for that.
But then one day, when I rejected Jalen again, he looked heartbroken.
“Miss, did I do something wrong? Or… do you just not need me anymore?”
Jalen had been an orphan, trained from childhood to be a bodyguard. My mother gave him to me when I was seven and told me he would protect me for life.
But when I looked into those beautiful eyes of his, I couldn’t say a word.§
He left, disappointed.”
By the time I realized I missed him, he was already gone.”
My mother told me the truth, and I hadn’t believed it at first.
“If you no longer need me, then I don’t know what the meaning of my life is.“}
That was what my mother said Jalen had told her.”
