After all, watching a clown perform was its own kind of entertainment.
I strolled unhurriedly toward Vernon and said softly, almost like a tease, “Do you want me to beg you?“}
For a moment, he actually thought I was giving in. His eyes lit with a brilliance I had never seen before. The sight of it unsettled me, making irritation flare in my chest.
“Ah, Keyshia,” he said with a triumphant smile, “I knew you’d come to your senses.“}
He tilted his head up, arrogance written all over his face.
“Admit it–you still love me. Whether in the past or now, you’ve always loved me. You pretend not to care, but everything you’ve done, isn’t it just to get my attention?“}
Then, in a tone as if he were granting me mercy, he added, “I admit, you’ve never been completely insignificant to me. If you can treat Joanie with respect from now on, I might be willing to make room for you in my life.“\
“Vernon!” Joanie burst into tears, clinging to him. “You promised me–there would never be a third party between us!“}
“You also swore you wouldn’t let her keep interfering in our lives,” she cried, looking so pitiful she could gain anyone’s sympathy. “We’re about to be married, and now you’re going to let her hurt me again?”
Her sobs obviously tugged at his heart. He gathered her gently, soothing her with a low voice. “Don’t worry. As long as I’m here, she won’t dare.”

I lifted my chin slightly. “If you’re done, then…” I crooked my pinky finger. At once, the head of the bodyguards stepped forward.”
I pointed at Vernon. “Years ago, he tore out every nail from Wiggle’s paws. I I want this dog to feel that same pain.”
The bodyguard captain lowered his head respectfully. “Got it, ma’am.”
Only then did Vernon realize something was wrong. He jabbed a finger at the man and roared, “Do And you’re taking her orders?!“}
But the captain had already moved, leading his men toward him.”
“Have you all lost your damn minds?!” Vernon bellowed. “Do you know who I am?!”

Joanie shrieked beside him, “We’re from the Browett Corporation! He’s the acting head of the company! Do you all have a death wish, listening to a traitor of the Browetts instead of us?“}
But the bodyguards had already seized them both.
“Let me go!” Vernon struggled wildly, his voice hoarse with fury. “You’ll regret this! Do you hear me? Let me go!“N
When the bodyguards approached with tools in hand, the confidence drained from his face. For the first time, I saw cracks of real terror split across his once lofty expression. The contrast was exquisite.”
I savored the sight while Joanie wailed, “Keyshia! Who the hell are you?!“W
Then she jabbed a finger at Kyler. “And him–who the hell is he?!“}
“Who is he?” I repeated with a chuckle. “Oh.”
I crossed the room and stood by Kyler’s side. Tenderly, I wiped the blood from his face, and he lowered his head obediently, letting me fuss over him. That softness in him tugged at my heart.”
“He’s my fiancé,” I answered.
At the word, Kyler’s eyes lit up instantly, and I couldn’t help but smile.
“Oh, I almost forgot the introductions.” Sliding my arm through his, I announced, “This is my fiancé–Kyler Butterfields.“”
