After hearing her praise, a hint of pride flickered across Donald’s face, though he said, “Don’t think flattering me will get you what you want.”
Vivienne earnestly asked, “What would it take for you to agree to treat her, Mr. Donald?”
Donald glanced at her. “If you’re really that persistent, then start by doing odd jobs around here. When I’m satisfied, I’ll consider treating you. How does that sound?”
Vivienne didn’t hesitate to agree.
Donald looked at her with some surprise. At first, he thought Vivienne was the patient, but seeing her healthy complexion, he figured she was just a rich noble with nothing better to do than invent illnesses. He’d seen his share of rich young ladies concocting ailments in his younger days.
He intended to test her resolve by making her do all the dirty and tiring jobs. Whenever she picked the wrong herbs, he scolded her harshly, even making her cry a few times. Yet, she would still show up at his clinic on time the next day.
About six months later, impressed by her sincerity and persistence despite her lack of any serious illness, Donald decided to help her.
That was when he found out Vivienne was seeking medicine for her mother–in–law.
Nowadays, girls as devoted as Vivienne were rare.
Donald’s opinion of her improved significantly. After talking more, he finally learned that Vivienne was the CEO of Harrington Corporation and Edmund’s wife.
So, for the past two years, he had been providing medicine for Vivienne’s mother–in–law, Talia.
It was a stubborn ailment of many years, not something that could be cured quickly. However, another year or so of treatment, and Talia’s headaches would be completely healed.
But in the past six months, Edmund and Lillian’s high–profile antics had even reached Donald, who usually paid little attention to the news.
And since only Vivienne had been visiting for the past two years without ever seeing Edmund, Donald was infuriated and bluntly told Vivienne he would no longer provide the medicine.
“Considering all the hard work you’ve put in helping me, I’ll help you this one last time.”
Donald took off his reading glasses and huffed, “But you have to bring your husband with you. It’s his mother we’re treating, and he hasn’t shown up once. What, has he outsourced his filial duties?”
Vivienne, having helped Donald for so long, knew how much he despised the wealthy, especially those who thought they could solve everything with money.
To someone like Donald, the Harrington family epitomized the type of rich he despised.
Vivienne paused for a few seconds before saying, “Mr. Donald, this is the last time, please help me. I need it to save my friend.”
Donald looked at her skeptically. “Save your friend?”

He cursed, “Is it your damned husband threatening you? Despicable! He wants the medicine but won’t come himself, and uses your friend as leverage?”
Vivienne knew Donald had misunderstood and explained, “Mr. Donald, you’ve got it wrong; my friend really did offend someone first.”
Despite her disdain for Edmund, Vivienne wasn’t one to distort the truth.
She laid out the whole story for Donald. She knew that people like him valued sincerity above all else.
Deceiving him would never work. After listening, Donald pondered for a long while before looking up at her.
“You want my help? Fine, but you have to agree to one condition.”
Vivienne perked up.
As long as Donald was willing to talk, there was hope. Donald might have been harsh with his words, but he was a good person. He had even taught her many health tips when Theo was born prematurely and weak.
“Please, Mr. Donald, go ahead.”
Donald glanced at her and said, “Didn’t you say you played the violin? Some of my patients are lonely seniors who’ve been left behind.”
“So, I want to hold a giving–back event for these seniors. If you perform for them, I’ll give you the medicine. How about that?”
Vivienne didn’t hesitate to agree.
“Of course, no problem.”
Vivienne added, “Mr. Donald, may I invite my mentor to perform with me?”
Donald squinted, studying her expression closely, trying to gauge whether she was being sincere.
“You’re really willing to perform for these old men and women?”
Vivienne smiled, “Before my mother passed away, my mentor and I often did charity performances at orphanages and nursing homes. This won’t be difficult for us.”
