Lillian’s voice was gentle, “Since I can’t persuade him, perhaps you, as Eddy’s wife, might have more influence. Besides, Serena is your friend.”
Vivienne heard the implication and scoffed inwardly.
Was this her way of showing off that Edmund would go so far as to harm her friend for Lillian?
The steam from the coffee cup gradually faded.
Vivienne spoke calmly, “Since Ms. Lillian doesn’t want to escalate things to a fatal level, can you tell me where Serena is?”
Lillian shook her head. “Sorry, I really don’t know. I’m here to ask if you could please talk to Eddy.”
Saying this, she glanced at the time and stood up.
“Eddy’s plane is about to land, and he might worry if he doesn’t see me soon… I shouldn’t stay long.”
Lillian picked up her purse from the table and turned to leave.
Watching Lillan’s retreating fg
Watching Lillian’s retreating figure, Vivienne’s clenched fist slowly relaxed.
Matt said Serena wasn’t taken by Edmund. Lillian said she was. Whose word was true and whose was false?
After settling the bill, Vivienne left the cafe. She didn’t go home but instead headed straight to the hospital. Vivienne knew which hospital Lillian was in, and the room number wasn’t hard to find.
Edmund had booked the entire floor of Lillian’s hospitalization, and the corridor was deserted at the
moment.
Just then, a series of steady footsteps echoed in the empty hallway, growing louder as they approached.
Vivienne tensed up, her breath involuntarily held. The footsteps passed by her hiding spot in the fire
escape.
Afraid of being discovered, she dared not move or look around.
Only after she heard a door quietly close did she step out of the fire escape.
She tiptoed to Lillian’s hospital room. Her own cautious reflection stared back at her from the glass window.
Vivienne paused. I’m Edmund’s legitimate wife, yet here I am, creeping around like a thief, afraid of being discovered.
And Lillian could appear before her so confidently, telling her how important she was to Edmund. Yes, Lillian was indeed important.
She had never doubted that. Otherwise, why could one phone call from me pull Edmund away? Otherwise, why didn’t she, as his official wife, warn me to stay away from him? Could it be that, deep down, she knew she couldn’t compete with me?

While Vivienne was lost in her thoughts, voices from inside the room interrupted her.

“Eddy, you just got back from a trip. There’s no need to rush over. Coming tomorrow would’ve been just as
fine.”
After a moment of silence, a familiar, cool male voice came through the crack in the door.
“I heard you went out today?”
Vivienne’s heart sank.
Edmund really did come to see her as soon as he landed.
She had just been wondering if Lillian was trying to stir up trouble. The sharp smell of disinfectant lingered in her breath, intensely irritating.
The conversation inside the room continued.
“I’ve been cooped up in
the hospital for too long, just wanted to get some fresh air, don’t worry.”
“Also…” Lillian seemed to remember something and spoke softly, “Since Serena realizes her mistake, let’s not make it harder for her. After all, she’s Ms. Everest’s friend.”
Edmund responded indifferently, but Vivienne knew that if he hadn’t taken Serena, he wouldn’t have made any commitment.
Her heart felt as if it were being squeezed painfully tight.
Matt was lying to her! Vivienne bit her lip so hard she tasted blood.
“Crash!” Something fell to the floor with a crisp sound.
Followed by Lillian’s low cry of surprise.
“Eddy, sorry, I got your coat dirty!”
Coat? Vivienne’s pupils flickered. She had always been gifted in music and painting.
Although she focused on learning the violin, she never neglected her painting.
Thus, on Edmund’s birthday, she gave him a blazer she personally designed as a present.
Although Edmund was usually reserved, it was clear he cherished the blazer she custom–made for him. Even then, he kissed her passionately for the first time, something he had never initiated except in bed. Even simple hugs and holding hands were rare.
