Chapter 51 Hospital Lies
Vivienne shook her head and asked, “Edmund kidnapped my friend because of Lillian. I want to find out what they’re planning.”
Matt was slightly taken aback. “Are you sure it was Eddy who took your friend?”
Vivienne’s eyes flickered. “It should be him.”
“You’re not certain; doesn’t that mean there’s a good chance it wasn’t Eddy?”
After thinking it over, Vivienne recounted the whole situation to Matt again.
Matt pondered for a moment before looking up at her. “You might be right; that’s possible. But it’s also possible she’s gotten herself into some other trouble and doesn’t want you to worry, so she’s hiding out for now.”
“Have you considered that if Serena wasn’t taken by Eddy, as his wife, just going off a hunch and accusing him could make things awkward between you two later?”
Vivienne paused; she indeed had no evidence, just suspicions.
Seeing her expression, Matt knew she wasn’t entirely sure. “You should head back,” Matt’s voice was magnetic. “I’ll ask around about this. If it wasn’t Eddy, I’ll try to track her down.”
“If it was Eddy, I’ll find a way to get him to release your friend.”
Vivienne looked at Matt, hesitant. “Why… why would you help me?”
A fleeting emotion flashed in Matt’s eyes, too quick to catch. “Eddy and I have been friends since we were kids. Helping you is helping Eddy. And…” He suddenly lowered his voice. “I’ve never really liked that Lillian; I even think… her illness might be feigned.”
Vivienne looked sharply at Matt. “You think so too?”
Matt nodded. “But that’s just a guess. We should keep quiet about things we have no proof of.”
He paused, then continued, “You want to confront Eddy, but you need evidence. Right now, you don’t have any; how can you demand he release someone? Leave this to me; I’ll get to the bottom of it.”
Vivienne was persuaded and nodded lightly. “Mr. Dunphy, thank you.”
Matt smiled warmly. “If you don’t mind, just call me Matt.”
Vivienne nodded and smiled back. “Alright, Matt.”
Despite not having Edmund’s stern authority or Victor’s reckless abandon, Matt was a true gentleman. He never blamed her when others did and often reminded Edmund not to jump to conclusions until everything was clear.
Truth be told, Vivienne had a good impression of him.
Matt spoke softly, “You should go home. I’ll contact you as soon as I have any news.”

After Lillian fell asleep, Edmund had people guard her bedside to prevent any further drastic actions.
Leaving the hospital room, Edmund saw Matt standing in the hallway.
Edmund’s eyes shifted slightly. “What brings you here?”
Matt turned around. “Is it true that you took Serena, Vivienne’s friend?”
“You came here because of this?”
Matt turned back. “Vivienne just told me; I ran into her a little while ago.”
Edmund’s deep gaze darkened. “Eddy,” Matt said, “I know Lillian means a lot to you, but no matter what, Vivienne is your wife, and you should at least consider her feelings.”
Such words weren’t new to Matt, but Edmund always stuck to his own views. “Once Vivienne finds out you kidnapped Serena for Lillian, it’s like slapping her face. The rift between you might be hard to mend.”
Edmund dismissed it lightly. “Matt, don’t be fooled by Vivienne. Just the other day, Victor saw her buying clothes for Theo at the mall.”
“She knows Lillian doesn’t have much time left, yet she still plays these games. Have you forgotten how she pretended to be sick, to be kidnapped, just to draw mine and Theo’s attention?”
“Having lived the high life for years, and now with Theo, how could she possibly want a divorce? These are just her tactics of retreat.”
Matt looked at Edmund, furrowing his brow, about to say something when the tightly closed door of the hospital room was suddenly pushed open.
The female nurse, relieved to see Edmund hadn’t gone far, quickly said, “Mr. Harrington, good thing you’re still here. Ms. Lillian is having a nightmare and can’t be awakened. Please, come see her.”
Edmund nodded and re–entered the room.
Matt watched Edmund’s departing figure and ultimately chose to remain silent.
