Vivienne finished recording and sat back down to eat. Dante watched her steady hands and calm relish. “Not upset?”
“They’ve done worse,” she said, sipping water. “I’m over it.”
He nodded thoughtfully.
Days later, Vivienne’s life settled into quiet. While shopping for yarn with Serena to knit a scarf, a snide voice cut in.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Vivienne?” Victor said.
She turned to see Victor sneering at her.
Spotting the kids‘ clothing bags in her hand, he scoffed. “Knew it, you’re all talk. No matter how you fake it, Eddy and Theo won’t care.”
“Vivienne, let me tell you something. Before Lillian came back, you could cling to Eddy like a lunatic. Now? Step aside, everyone does.”
Serena bristled. “Hey, enough!”
“Why? Look at her, a nobody housewife. She’s not worthy of Eddy.”
“Shut it!” Serena trembled with rage. “I’ve never seen a prouder mistress!”
“Who’s the mistress?” Victor laughed mockingly. “Everyone knows Vivienne slept her way into forcing Eddy to marry her. Lillian would’ve been with him otherwise… She’s the shameless one, pointing fingers.” Vivienne, silent till now, spoke up. “Marriage takes two willing people. If he didn’t agree, we wouldn’t have a license. He married me, whatever he had with your precious Lillian is history.”
Shorter than Victor, she stood tall, unshaken. “Any reason or excuse, meddling in a marriage makes you a
mistress.”
“Even with the title of Mrs. Harrington, so what?” Victor sneered. “One word from Lillian that she’s scared, and Eddy drops everything to be at her side at midnight. He comes home when she says. Bet he’s barely been around lately, he’s with Lillian, fretting over a cold. Even your son’s glued to her, blaming you for making her sick. Soon, she’ll be Theo’s new mom!”
He shot her a triumphant look and strutted off.
“Unbelievable!” Serena lunged, but Vivienne held her back.
“No anger here,” Vivienne said calmly. “Don’t waste energy on a brainless lapdog. I’m working with a lawyer on the divorce, I’ll be free soon.”
Serena fumed. “You gave so much to them, wasted years, and get nothing? It’s unfair!”
“Doesn’t matter,” Vivienne shrugged. “It’s not too late to start over. He taught me to rely on myself.”

Days later, Adrian called. “Vivi, talked to Serena today?”
“No,” Vivienne said, sensing trouble. “What’s wrong?”

“She found some studio spots and asked me to check them yesterday. This morning, she’s gone silent. I’m worried so I called you.”
“What happened? Did she encounter any problem?”
“Last time we met, a guy called Victor showed up, spewing trash and insulting you.”
