“I don’t have it,” Vivienne said flatly.
Edmund frowned. “You’ve supplied Mom for years, and now you don’t have it?”
Lillian pressed, “Ms. Everest, I know things have been rough with Eddy lately. Can’t you… set that aside? Since Madam Talia’s health matters.”
Vivienne’s patience thinned. “I said I don’t have it. Mr. Harrington’s so incredible, why’s he asking a housewife like me for medicine?”
Edmund’s face hardened, his voice icy. “Vivienne, how long are you going to drag this out?”
Before she could retort, Lillian stood. “Ms. Everest, I know you’ve misunderstood me. If this is resentment…” She bit her lip. “I’ll apologize.”
She bowed deeply. “Ms. Everest, I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”
Her dramatic gesture in the upscale restaurant drew eyes. Vivienne watched silently as Lillian held the bow, waiting for absolution.
Edmund’s expression grew colder with each passing second. Just as he opened his mouth, Vivienne spoke. “Do you even know what you did wrong?”
Lillian’s eyes darted like a startled fawn’s. She glanced at Edmund, whispering, “I… shouldn’t have come back with a terminal illness…”
She steeled herself. “If you’ll give Madam Talia the medicine, I’ll vanish from you and Eddy’s lives forever. My fate won’t trouble you anymore…”
Before Lillian could even finish talking, “Lillian, what are you saying?!” Edmund snapped.
Tears welled in her eyes. “I don’t have long left anyway. I’d trade it for Madam Talia’s health.”
“Don’t talk like that,” he growled, his face grim.
Lillian forced a brave smile, tears streaming down. “If Ms. Everest agrees, it’s worth it.”
Whispers erupted around them.
“Oh god, how can the woman torment someone dying?”
“It looks like she’s begging for medicine, that woman’s holding life–saving medicine hostage, so cruel.”
“Hey, she apologized!” someone shouted. “What more do you want? She’s pitiful!”
“Yeah, don’t push her to death!” More people joined. “Forgive and let go, why so harsh?”
