He gazed at Lillian lying on the hospital bed. “Weren’t you both at the parent–child game this morning?”
Theo’s small face was icy. “Being in a game together doesn’t make her my mom.”
“But when everyone asked, you didn’t deny it,” August said, his voice brimming with childlike innocence. “And didn’t you say Ms. Everest is just a nanny at your house?”
Nanny. The word hit like a thunderbolt. The room fell silent, the air thick with tension. Everyone’s expressions shifted subtly. Some truths were unspoken yet understood by all, too delicate to voice aloud. If word got out that Mrs. Harrington was treated like a nanny at home, the gossip wouldn’t center on Vivienne but on Edmund and the entire Harrington family.
At that moment, Dante, who had been quiet, broke the silence.
“Vivi, I came to give you something.” Dante said.
All eyes turned to him.
Dante’s lips curved into a casual smile as he handed Vivienne a phone.
She unlocked it and found a video. Playing it, she saw herself and Lillian on the screen, captured at the staircase.
Vivienne froze. “This is…”
“The video showing why Ms. Lillian fell down the stairs,” Dante replied.
“Video?” Lillian’s eyes flickered with alarm. “But there aren’t any cameras in that part of the staircase…” Vivienne turned to her. “How would Ms. Lillian know there are no cameras there?”
Caught off guard, Lillian forced a smile. “When I was looking for Theo, I glanced around and noticed there didn’t seem to be any cameras in that direction…”
Dante’s tone was languid. “True, there are no cameras there. But August was filming Vivi coming down the stairs and happened to catch this intriguing moment.”
His phone was state–of–the–art, its resolution razor–sharp. The video laid bare the truth, Vivienne hadn’t touched Lillian. Lillian had chased after her and stumbled on her own.
When the video ended, a heavy silence enveloped the room.
Dante chuckled. “No cameras, sure, but thank goodness August recorded it. Otherwise, Vivi would’ve been in deep trouble.”
Lillian hastened to clarify, “I never said Ms. Everest pushed me.”
Vivienne met her gaze. “But when I was accused, you didn’t say it wasn’t me either.”
Victor, stunned that Vivienne wasn’t the culprit, felt his cheeks burn with embarrassment. Yet he shrugged it off. “Well, Theo said he saw it. Your own son pointed the finger at you, who wouldn’t believe him?”
Theo stared at the looping video, his pupils trembling. “Mom and Ms. Lillian were so close, and then Ms. Lillian fell. I thought… I thought…”

August piped up, genuinely puzzled. “Then why did you assume your mom’s a bad person?”

For some reason, Theo found August insufferable. He glared at him. “Because Mom’s always bullying Ms. Lillian!”
“I don’t believe it!” August shot back, his voice rising. “Ms. Everest is gentle and kind, she’d never bully anyone. You’re the ones bullying her!”
He pressed on, relentless. “Like just now, she clearly fell on her own, but you said Ms. Everest pushed her! Ms. Everest’s the best mom in the world!”
Theo watched as Vivienne, who once doted on him endlessly, now fussed over another child instead of comforting him. His eyes reddened with fury. “She’s my mom, not yours!”
August stood firm. “But you’ve never treated Ms. Everest like a mom, you just see her as a nanny!” He stepped in front of Vivienne. “Starting today, I won’t let you bully her anymore!”
Even a child could see it, his own son preferred another woman. The irony was unbearable.
Theo opened his mouth but found no words.
Edmund observed the squabbling children, a flicker of irritation stirring within him.
