Chapter 23 I Was Never That Important
Chapter 23 I Was Never That Important.
Edmund suddenly remembered the scene of Lillian’s car accident. It seemed that he had received a call from Vivienne at the time.
However, the situation had been urgent, and he hadn’t ad time to answer. So, he had hung up.
With that thought, Edmund called her back.
Beep, beep, beep…
The phone rang for a long time, but no one answered.
the call automatically disconnected, Edmund’s brows furrowed deeper.
He dialed a few mor
times, but still, no one picked up
Is she giving me the cold shoulder just because I didn’t take he call earlier? Victor always says women shouldn’t be spoiled too much. Maybe I’ve been too easy on her. That’s why she thinks she can keep treating me like this.
In the hospital room, the phone on the bedside table vibrated, buzzing softly. But Vivienne had long since fallen into a deep sleep.
It wasn’t until the next morning, when she woke up, that she saw the missed calls on the screen.
Her lips curled into a mocking smile. With an indifferent expression, she placed the phone back on the nightstand.
Half an hour later, a knock sounded at the hospital room door.
A few uniformed traffic officers had come to investigate the accident.
Vivienne recounted her experience truthfully. “I was turning when the other driver suddenly sped out without slowing down at all,”
After taking down her statement, one of the officers asked, “Ms. Everest, are you sure she hit you and not the other way around?”
The way they phrased the question, Vivienne sensed something was off.
She asked, “What? Is she denying that she hit me?”
For an accident like this, responsibility had to be determined.
The officer didn’t hide anything. “That’s right. Since the crash happened in a remote area with no surveillance cameras, we can’t determine fault yet. We need to collect statements from both parties first.”
Vivienne asked, “Is she in the same hospital as me?”
“Yes, this is the closest hospital to the accident site, the officer said, pausing briefly before adding, “Currently, the other driver insists that you hit her first. We’re actively looking for eyewitnesses and other

evidence. We’ll notify you as soon as we have any updates, Ms. Everest:
Vivienne responded politely, “I appreciate it.”
The officers soon left.
Watching their retreating figures, Vivienne’s gaze darkened.
She never believed in coincidences like this.
Of all the people she could have crashed into, it just had to be Lillian.
Is Lillian trying to force Edmund to make a choice?
In another hospital room, Henry quietly reported to Edmund, “The traffic police said the other party refuses to admit she hit someone. In fact, she even claims that Ms. Lillian was the one who caused the accident. That area is too remote, and there are no surveillance cameras. If we wait for the investigation, it might take a long time…”
Lillian, lying on the hospital bed nearby, immediately showed a look of shock and fear upon hearing this.
“That woman rushed out like a maniac, without slowing down at all. If it wasn’t drunk driving, then it was intentional murder!”
As she spoke, she looked at her arm, wrapped in a plaster cast, her eyes welling up with tears.
“I wanted to hold one last concert in my final days, But now, I don’t even know if my hand will ever
recover….
Edmund said calmly, “I’ve already arranged a medical team for you. Focus on your recovery. I’ll handle this matter.”
Lillian shook her head, her tear–filled eyes hazy. “She must have used some connections to erase the surveillance footage. That’s the only way we’d have no evidence. In the end, this will probably just go unresolved…”
“Don’t worry. I won’t let you suffer injustice.”
Only then did Lillian break into a smile through her tears. She knew that Edmund never made promises lightly. Once he said he would do something, he would see it through.
A few minutes later, Henry arrived outside another hospital room.
He had already found out that the owner of the car that collided with Lillian was staying in this very room.
Naturally, something like this wasn’t important enough for Edmund to handle personally.
Henry knocked on the door before stepping inside.
Edmund, meanwhile, stood in the hallway and called Vivienne once again.
Just like yesterday, no one answered.

A strange sense of irritation rose within him.
He was about to dial again when he saw Henry walking out with a strange expression on his face.
Edmund paused. “Why are you back so soon? She still won’t admit it?”
Henry glanced at him cautiously, looking like he wanted to say something but hesitated.
After a long moment, he finally spoke.
“Mr. Harrington, you should go see for yourself.”
Henry was an exceptionally capable assistant. Such a minor issue wouldn’t trouble him.
For him to insist that Edmund see it in person, it had to be something serious.
Edmund shot him a glance before pushing open the hospital room door.
When he saw the woman sitting inside, his expression froze.
“Vivienne? What are you doing here?”
Vivienne had already heard from Henry why Edmund had come.
Seeing him now, she wasn’t surprised at all.
She sat on the edge of the hospital bed, her delicate face a little pale, with a few faint scabs on her forehead.

Looking at him, she said flatly, “Why am I here? Mr. Harrington, aren’t you asking the obvious? As for why you’re here, you should know better than I do.”
Edmund’s gaze darkened. “The person who had an accident with Lillian was you?”
Vivienne replied lightly, “Yes.”
In that instant, Edmund understood everything.
His dark eyes flickered like a wavering candle flame.
His gaze was complicated as he looked at her. “When you called me yesterday, were you in the car?”
Vivienne’s voice was soft, void of any discernible emotion.
“I had my foot stuck in the car when you saved Ms. Lillian. I called you, hoping you’d help me too.”
But he had hung up.
Even if he had just glanced in her direction, he would have seen her.
But he didn’t. He didn’t even make an attempt.
His entire mind had been consumed by Lillian. He never spared anyone else even a fraction of attention.

Was Vivienne disappointed?

She had stopped expecting anything from him a long time ago, so there was no disappointment to speak
- of.
But being abandoned in a life–or–death moment felt terrible.
She never wanted to experience it again in her life.
“Sorry.” Edmund said in a low voice. “I didn’t know you were there.
Vivienne smiled faintly. “Yes, you didn’t know. You thought my call was about something unimportant, like
mething trivial. So you didn’t hesitate to hang up. Because…
She looked him in the eye, enunciating each word.
“To you, I was never that important.”
At this moment, any explanation would only sound like an excuse.
Edmund remained silent.
Vivienne closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them again, they were calm and devoid of emotion.
“Mr. Harrington, if you have something to say, just get to the point.”
It was only then that Edmund remembered why he had come.
“Were you the one who hit Lillian?”
