Chapter 9
Three days later, Quinton and I got married. Layla moved in with us too.
What I didn’t expect was running into Thomas and Christina coming out of the courthouse just as we were leaving City Hall. He looked somewhat surprised to see me.
Christina, however, shot me a venomous look.
Quinton wrapped his arm around my waist, beaming. “How rude of you. Aren’t you going to greet my wife?”
Thomas forced a bitter smile. “Uncle Quinton, Aunt Evelyn, hello.”
As Quinton and I were about to leave, Thomas reached out toward me, though he didn’t even touch the hem of my clothes.
Quinton stepped in front of me, pulling out our marriage license. “She’s my wife–get that straight!”
I ignored him completely and walked toward the exit with Quinton. Suddenly, we heard a loud thud behind us.
The once–proud Thomas had fallen to the ground in front of the crowd, completely without dignity.
“Evelyn, I wronged you.

“Christina and I are divorced. My company is on the verge of bankruptcy too.”
I didn’t turn around, unmoved by his words.
I looked at Quinton, who seemed a bit hurt.
I stood on my tiptoes and kissed his cheek.
On the way home, he explained everything to me.
“Thomas’s company only survived this long because of my
connections.
“As for Christina, I found her plastic surgery records.”
My eyes widened in surprise. Quinton’s tone turned cold. “I won’t let you suffer for nothing.”
I stopped thinking about them. After all, they were no longer part of my life.
That evening, I suddenly received a call from my watch.
The ringtone only lasted a few seconds before stopping.
I had Quinton look into it. It turned out that after Thomas went bankrupt, Oscar was being discriminated against and bullied at school.

I transferred Oscar to a public elementary school. His life finally stabilized.
After all, I had made him a promise.
Multiple media outlets attended Quinton’s and my wedding.
He admitted that he had mentioned me during a financial news interview.
He looked somewhat proud. “I want the whole world to know you’re my wife now!”
I couldn’t help but laugh. The media called it the wedding of the century.
Instead of flowers, the venue was decorated with dazzling crystals.
Quinton publicly transferred all his assets to my name.
Starry served as the ring bearer, while Layla wore a little dress as the flower girl.
Standing on stage in my wedding dress, I noticed Thomas standing forlornly in a corner.
I pretended not to see him and focused on completing the ceremony with Quinton.

When the wedding ended, I officially became his wife.
As the guests were leaving, my parents appeared.

They were holding Oscar’s hand, looking at Quinton and me with words left unspoken.
In such a short time, my parents seemed to have aged several years, and Oscar’s eyes had grown dim.
Seeing me, he immediately burst into tears. His mouth opened and closed, but he couldn’t bring himself to speak.
My parents also looked like they had something to say, their eyes full of guilt.
I simply smiled softly and prepared to leave.
They called out to me with trembling voices, but I remained unmoved.
Oscar also urgently called out “Mom.”
I said, “Oscar, you’ve grown up. Now you’ve learned to distinguish right from wrong too.
“Let me teach you one last lesson: people must take responsibility for what they say and do.”

He cried while shaking and nodding his head. My parents‘ faces flushed red.
Quinton and I closed the door. After our marriage, Layla had completely accepted him as her father.
She even pestered me to give her a little sister to play with.
I rolled my eyes at Quinton and bent down to comfort Layla. But before long, I became pregnant.
I really did give birth to a baby girl.
Quinton named her Isabella Martin, meaning “God’s promise.”
Layla said she finally had a sister. I felt somewhat worried. Quinton immediately guessed what I was thinking.
“Our family now has one queen and two little princesses.”
