Chapter 10 Trystan’s Ignorance
Trystan, who had been watching, strode in slowly. Then, he glanced at Janet with gloomy eyes and asked, “Why are you still awake?”
His arrival was too sudden for Janet. She tugged at his clothes adorably so he would sit by the side of her bed before she wrapped her arms around him. “I slept too much during the day, and I can’t sleep now. Why are you here?”
“To visit you.” Trystan’s gaze landed on me as he spoke. Frowning, he immediately ordered, “Deal with that now!”
His voice was cold and devoid of concern.
Janet put on a regretful expression as she hugged him. “I was too careless, and I accidentally injured Evie.”
Trystan stroked her long hair with an indifferent face. It seemed like he wasn’t going to reprimand her.
My heart ached so badly that I couldn’t even breathe as if I had been forced to the edge of a cliff. Slowly, I dragged my feet out of the ward.
I knew I would lose the bet from the beginning, but I was hoping that Trystan would at least inquire if I was hurt. That would have been enough for me.
But he didn’t spare me a second glance. He didn’t even seem to pity me.
In the hallway, a sturdy person blocked my way. I looked up and was met with Lanny’s stern gaze and his furrowed brows.
Confused, I greeted him, “Dr. Dennis!”
He gave me a long look before he asked, “Does it hurt?”
At his question, sorrow and bitterness washed over me. Tears began to stream down my cheeks and fall to the floor. The cold wind blew across the hallway, intensifying the bleakness and the quietness of the hall.
Even an acquaintance would ask if I was hurt. How could he, the person who was married to me for two years, ignore me?
Lanny took my hand. I subconsciously wanted to withdraw my hand, but his grip tightened.
“I’m a doctor!” Lanny said, leaving no room for argument. He was a doctor, so it was his responsibility to treat me.
I knew that he wasn’t a nosy person. However, I was Trystan’s wife.
I followed Lanny into an office. He talked to the nurse on duty before he turned to tell me, “Cooperate with her. She will bandage you.”
I nodded. “Thank you!”
After Lanny left, the nurse cleaned the injury on my hand carefully. She frowned when she caught sight of several blisters. “This is rather serious. It might leave a scar on your hand.”
“It’s fine.” This was a lesson to be remembered.
As there were blisters, the nurse had to prick them to clean the burns thoroughly.
Worried that I wouldn’t be able to bear the pain, she reminded me, “It might hurt. You have to hold back.”
“Sure!”
This was nothing. The pain in my heart was more unbearable than this.
After treating my wound, the nurse gave me some brief instructions. I was on the way back to Janet’s ward when I heard someone talking in the stairwell. I came to a stop out of curiosity.
“Arnold is dead. When will you divorce her?” Was it Lanny’s voice?
“Her? You mean Evie?” another familiar male voice asked coldly. It was Trystan.
I moved closer to the stairwell and saw Trystan leaning against the railing with his hands in his pockets. He had a cold face. Lanny was leaning against the wall, holding a lit cigarette between his slender fingers.
Tapping on the cigarette gently, Lanny stared at Trystan before he stated indifferently, “You know that she is innocent. She just loves you.”
Trystan looked up and glanced at him, saying coldly, “When did you become this concerned for her?”
At his words, Lanny frowned. “Don’t overthink it. I was merely reminding you in hopes that you won’t regret your decision in the future. Even though she loves you deeply now, she may eventually throw her love away.”
“Heh!” Trystan sneered. “I’ve always scorned her love…”
I couldn’t bring myself to listen to the rest of his sentence. Some things were better when not heard. I would be a fool if I insisted on eavesdropping.
