Chapter 1 Pregnancy
I was six weeks pregnant.
Thunderstruck, I was riveted to the spot as I saw my ultrasound report. I only slept with Trystan once. How could I have gotten pregnant?
I was at a loss for what to do.
I thought, “Should I tell Trystan about it? Will he refuse to divorce me because of my pregnancy? No, I doubt it! He may think that I’m shamelessly using this child to blackmail him.”
Suppressing the depression in my heart, I stuffed the ultrasound report into my bag as I went out of the hospital.
There was a black Maybach waiting outside the hospital with a window rolled down a bit. A handsome man with a cool expression could be vaguely seen sitting in the driver’s seat.
A good-looking man in a luxury car would undoubtedly attract the attention of many passersby.
Trystan Compton was wealthy and attractive. I had long been used to this after so many years. Ignoring them, I got into the passenger seat.
When the man who was resting with his eyes closed heard the noise, he frowned slightly. Without opening his eyes, he asked in a deep voice, “Are you done?”
“Yes.” I nodded as I handed the contract signed with the hospital to him. “Dr. Foster asked me to pay his respects to you.” I had planned to sign the contract at the hospital today, but I bumped into Trystan on my way here. For some reason, he offered to take me here, saying that it was on his way.
“You’ll be in charge of the project.” Trystan had always been reserved. He didn’t take the contract. Instead, he ordered me in a perfunctory manner before he started the car.
I nodded and kept silent.
I seemed to know to do nothing but obey his orders.
The car drove toward the downtown area. It was already evening now, so I was puzzled about where he was going if not back to the villa. Although I felt confused, I never took the initiative to ask him anything. I just remained silent.
Thinking of the ultrasound report, I didn’t know how to talk to him. I looked sideways at him. As usual, he had a cold and distant aura, his sharp eyes focused straight ahead.
“Trystan!” I said. My palms sweated as I clutched my bag. It was probably due to my nervousness.
“Go ahead,” he replied briefly and coldly.
This was the way he had always treated me anyway. After a long time, I no longer cared about it. I calmed down, took a deep breath, and announced, “I’m…” Pregnant.
It was a short sentence, yet I bit my tongue the moment his phone abruptly rang.
“Janet, what’s wrong?” Someone would only be gentle and loving to a specific person.
Trystan’s gentleness was only for Janet Reese. It was easy to see from the way he talked to her.
Janet’s words over the phone caused Trystan to abruptly hit the brake and say soothingly, “Alright. I’ll be there in a while. Don’t go anywhere.”
As soon as he hung up, his face became cold again. Glancing at me, he ordered, “Get out.”
His order was domineering.
This was not the first time that he had driven me out of his car. I nodded and gave up on telling him about my pregnancy before opening the car door and getting out.
My marriage with Trystan was a fated accident, but it had nothing to do with love. Trystan loved Janet, so I meant nothing to him. Perhaps, he even took me as an obstacle.
Two years ago, Arnold Compton, Trystan’s grandfather, suffered from a heart attack. While he was in the hospital, he forced Trystan to marry me. For his grandfather’s sake, Trystan reluctantly married me. During the two years that his grandfather was still alive, Trystan ignored me. Now that his grandfather had died, Trystan couldn’t wait to get a lawyer to draft the divorce agreement for me to sign.
The sky was dark when I came back to the villa. The large house was empty, like a haunted house. Perhaps because of my pregnancy, I didn’t have an appetite. So, I went straight to my bedroom to wash up and go to bed.
In a daze, I heard the faint sound of a car engine being switched off. It was from the yard.
I wondered, “Is Trystan back?
“He’s supposed to be with Janet now, isn’t he?”
