They leapt into the fountain without hesitation, carefully pulling her back up onto the shore.
Mathilda was still crying–pitiful and fragile, helpless and breaking.
Jonah and Sean couldn’t stop thinking about the cold look in Lily’s eyes earlier, her beautiful peach blossom gaze filled with distance and resentment as she stood soaked to the skin.
But they told themselves–Mathilda only framed Lily tonight because Lily had deliberately provoked her with cruel words.
And years ago, many people had witnessed Lily hurting Mathilda. The bullying had been real.
In the end, their hearts still leaned toward Mathilda.
They rushed to comfort her, hiccuping from sobs.

But if her eyes were puffy and swollen by morning, Grace and the others might think he’d bullied her- delaying his plans for a clean divorce.
So, he decided to wake her up.
“Lily. Wake up.”
“Mom…”
Lily was still crying.
She felt so cold–longing deeply for her mother.
But in her dream, her mother was far, far away. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t reach her.

After a moment of thought, he finally reached out and gave her shoulder a light pat, trying to wake her.
“Mom..”
He thought the gentle pat would snap her out of the nightmare.
