Chapter 6
Allison stared at Jacob with a cold expression, as if he were a stranger acting out of line.
“Jacob, she was the one who shoved me.”
Her entire body throbbed with pain, and her head spun, but it was the heartbreak that kept her awake.
Only then did Jacob seem to notice the blood on her forehead. Fear quickly spread across his face.
“Allison, are you okay?”
the police
Allison turned her face away without replying. She calmly gave the exact address over the phone and ended the call. Jacob’s face grew darker.
“Sadie didn’t mean to do it. If she gets a criminal record, she’ll lose her job in the police department.”
Allison stared at him, her eyes full of disappointment. “So I deserved to be pushed?”
Jacob couldn’t say a word. Sadie had already rushed into his arms, shaking and sobbing, “Jacob… my stomach really hurts…”
His face tensed up. He quickly lifted Sadie into his arms and left the
scene.
Allison stood still as their silhouettes faded away, and despair started to take over her heart.

Soon, the sound of sirens filled the air. She was brought to the hospital, and her wounds were treated. Afterward, the police asked her to explain what happened. Once they finished writing everything down, the two officers gave her a strange look.
One officer said, “Ms. Eslinger, we’re sorry. The corridor surveillance camera was somehow broken, and… your husband, the only eyewitness, said it was an accident.”
“Somehow broken?” Allison asked, her voice dull. “What a perfect coincidence, huh?”
Trying to remain fair, the officer said, “We don’t have solid proof, and… with your husband vouching for Ms. Lawler, she won’t be detained.”
Allison wanted to scoff, but every part of her body hurt too much.
“He’s not my husband,” she said slowly, forcing out every word through gritted teeth.
“He’s an accomplice. I demand a new investigation.”
The two officers exchanged surprised glances, nodded, and said they would continue the investigation before walking out.
A little later, Jacob pushed open the door to her hospital room. He held a bowl of oatmeal and spoke gently, “You should eat something. You must be hungry.‘

Allison stared at him, her skin crawling, as if the man in front of her was a total stranger.
She said sharply, “You deleted the surveillance footage, just to protect Sadie.”
Jacob froze for a moment. A flicker of anguish crossed his face. “Allison,

Sadie didn’t mean it. She just got back from abroad. This is a crucial time for her career. She can’t afford…”
Her voice started shaking as she spoke, “You used to say you’d always honor your profession, stay loyal to the country. But no
now, you’re
protecting a criminal!”
Jacob’s tone suddenly grew louder, “Why did you even bother her in the first place? Why can’t you just leave her alone?”
Allison started shaking. She grabbed the glass of water from the table and hurled it at him, shouting, “That necklace belonged to my mom! Why is she wearing it? Who gave you the right to give it to her?!
“Jacob, she’s the one who came after me first!”
The glass shattered on the floor. Jacob stepped back, his face showing mixed emotions.
“You really need to calm down… I’ll fix this, but I’m not talking about it. anymore.”
He walked out, leaving the room in total silence.
Allison breathed rapidly, her chest rising and falling quickly. She couldn’t calm herself. She understood that with Jacob’s connection in the police department, this matter would definitely come to nothing.
He had betrayed her and the profession he once honored.
Or maybe, he was never a good person to begin with, and she’d just been living in the lie all along.
Just then, her phone rang loudly, making her heart race. Her hands were so unsteady that she dropped the phone a few times before finally answering.
