Chapter 22
Jacob’s expression twisted violently. He stared at Allison and roared, “Did you fall for him? Are you with him? Are you marrying him!?”
With each question, his eyes grew redder.
Allison took a deep breath, glaring coldly at him.
“None of your business! Get out now!”
Jacob shouted, “Why? You loved me most before!”
“No shouting in the hospital!” Doctors and nurses hurried over, frowning at Jacob. “Sir, please leave!”
“Allison! Say something!”
Jacob charged forward like a madman, reaching to grab Allison’s wrist.
But instantly, his own wrist was clamped in a vise–like grip as the security guard coldly flashed his police ID card.
“Jacob, you’re directly linked to this car crash. Cooperate with our investigation.”
Allison froze, then stared at Jacob with furious disbelief.
“No!” Jacob’s expression hardened as he struggled violently. “Let go! I’m innocent!”
The negotiator’s trademark composure vanished entirely–now he resembled a raving lunatic.

The guard snapped handcuffs onto him. “You’re under arrest for suspected murder. Save your defense for the courtroom.”
Allison staggered backward and collapsed into a chair.

It was her… it was her who had caused Markus this unexpected calamity. If anything happened to Markus…
“Ding-”
The operating room light turned green, and a nurse hurried out. “Family here?”
Allison instinctively stood up. “Wh–what’s wrong?”
“The patient’s temporarily out of danger. We’re transferring him to a ward for observation. Family should go settle the fees.”
Allison’s legs gave way as tears of relief streamed down her face.
She no longer cared about Jacob’s venomous glare. After thanking the nurse, she rushed to pay the fees.
Two months later at the rehabilitation center, Markus was officially discharged.
Allison arrived to pick him up, still visibly nervous.
“Should we bring the wheelchair? Are your wounds fully healed?”
Markus took her hand and pulled her close, reassuring her: “I’m perfectly fine. My recovery’s strong all those years on the front lines weren’t
wasted.”

Seeing Markus’s much rosier complexion, Allison finally let out a long breath and relaxed.
Guilt lingered in her heart, always fearing something might happen to Markus or that he’d suffer lasting effects.
For these two months, she’d stayed by Markus’s side, caring for him and joining his rehabilitation sessions.
Markus gently gazed at her, softly offering, “Tonight I’ll stew beef for you?”
Allison parted her lips to refuse, yet seeing the hopeful look in his eyes, she finally nodded. “Beef is trigger foods. You can’t have it. Stick to your nutritional meals.”
Markus wore an injured expression. “Fine. Watching you eat still makes me happy.”
As they walked out together, Allison lowered her voice. “It’s confirmed. Jacob hired hitmen for murder–targeting a commander… The court sentenced him to life imprisonment.”
After a moment of silence, Allison said hoarsely, “I never thought he’d do something like this… Can a person really become so completely unrecognizable?”
Markus gently placed his hand on her wrist.
“That’s why those who stay true to themselves are especially sincere and precious.”
A week later, Allison stood in the prison meeting room. The iron door opened, revealing a man who had become a complete stranger.

His once straight shoulders were now hunched, and only his eyes held at faint trace of the person she remembered.
“I didn’t think you’d come,” Jacob’s voice rasped with roughness.
Allison placed items from her bag onto the table. “Your things. Do you recognize them?”
Jacob’s gaze locked onto them. How could he not recognize them? They were all the medals he had once been so proud of.
It was the glory of his career.
“Seeing this now, do you feel guilty?” Allison’s voice was ice–cold.
Jacob trembled in agony, his emaciated frame looking ready to collapse.
“I… I just loved you too much…”
“Your love is despicable–filled with lies and pain. You don’t deserve to speak of love.”
Allison stood up and murmured softly, “I warned you before: faithless men end up abandoned and alone.”
“Spend the rest of your life in prison.”
Allison walked away as Jacob’s shattered roar echoed behind her. She
didn’t look back.
Outside the prison gates, Markus leaned against a parasol tree waiting for her. Seeing her emerge, he extended his hand. “Go home?”
Allison gazed at that hand–gentle and steady.

She reached out and interlocked her fingers with his.
“Mhm, let’s go home.”
