Chapter 20
Allison went straight to the county clerk’s office and filed a formal complaint against Jacob for shielding criminals and dereliction of duty.
She restored the stairwell surveillance footage, backing it up as direct evidence.
The footage clearly showed Sadie shoving her down the stairs, while Jacob’s official statement had claimed: “I witnessed Allison fall on her own and push Sadie.”
Allison had just made a great contribution, so no one dared to ignore her demands. The commander issued an order directly, demanding an immediate investigation into the matter. Soon, Jacob was taken into custody.
Jacob never knew Allison had such capability. He was both shocked and saddened at once.
But he had no way to argue; it was indeed him who hurt Allison for Sadie’s sake, and he was deceived.
“Jacob, do you have anything else to say?”
Jacob closed his eyes briefly, his face filled with bitterness and pain.
“No…”
It was as if he had been punched in the chest, he staggered and slumped into the chair.

But Allison never looked at him from start to finish. After all the evidence was submitted, she left, as if saying another word to Jacob was a waste of time and energy.
The verdict was soon announced: Jacob was given a major demerit, placed under house arrest for investigation, stripped of his position, and permanently barred from public service.
The incident sent shockwaves through the department–how could their famously uncompromising negotiator be such a disgrace? He’d betrayed his profession and homeland!
Scorn and condemnation rained down upon him, instantly turning Jacob into a pariah hunted by all.
One week later, Rafael brought Sadie before a military tribunal, presenting every piece of damning evidence. The verdict came swiftly: death penalty.
With the matter finally settled, Jacob encountered Allison on the day he surrendered his credentials.
He stood like a walking skeleton, hollow eyes fixed on Allison.
“Allison, are you still willing to forgive me?”
Allison didn’t speak, intending to walk away directly, but Jacob swayed and suddenly knelt in front of Allison.
“Allison, I was wrong, I was really wrong…”
Allison looked at him and suddenly felt somewhat ridiculous.

something is done, it leaves a mark; a broken mirror can never be made whole again.
As Allison’s silence stretched on, Jacob’s expression slowly grew frantic.
“Allison! Look at me! Look at me now! I’ve lost everything, isn’t that enough!?”
Allison laughed mockingly, “Jacob, this is your own doing. Do you remember what you said when you proposed to me?”
Jacob’s face turned ashen, he moved his lips but couldn’t speak.
Allison enunciated each word clearly: “You said the most important things in your life are your career, your homeland, and… me.”
“But what have you done? You’ve disgraced your career, you’ve betrayed your homeland, and you’ve betrayed me!”
Each word was like a knife, stabbing deep into Jacob’s heart.
He staggered, his spine deeply bent.
Allison was right… everything he had, he had betrayed himself, and he was reaping what he sowed.
Just as Allison was about to walk around him and leave, a voice suddenly rang out.
“Well, what a coincidence.”
Markus strolled over, a bright rose held in his hand, and then walked straight to Allison, placing it in her hand.

“Allison, I’m here to pick you up.”
Jacob stared at the vivid red rose, his eyes instantly reddening.
“What are you doing!? Got a death wish?”
Yet Markus ignored him, focused solely on Allison. “What would you like for dinner tonight? I’ve learned to make steak–without the red wine”
Jacob nearly lost his mind. He surged to his feet, snarling, “I’ll kill you-“.
But before he could rise fully, security guards behind him forced him down.
“Stay down!”
Pinned to his seat, he watched helplessly as Allison fell into step beside Markus. Side by side, they walked slowly into the distance.
