How could someone be so shameless?
They were hiding behind the accident, as if
that excused them from everything.
The accident forced me to drop out of high
school and raise my brother.
I was a girl who hadn’t even finished high
school, and I had a baby to take care of.
I suffered more than they could imagine.
I had to take my brother to work.
No one wanted to hire me with a kid.
I ended up washing dishes at a restaurant.
The boss knew I couldn’t find a better job, so
he cut my pay.
After paying rent, I had nothing left.
I started delivering food at night to make
extra money.
As my brother got older, expenses increased.
Kindergarten, clothes, everything cost money.
I wanted to work 24/7.
I never rested for fifteen years, until my
brother got into college.
I found out it was all a lie.
I was supposed to be the mayor’s daughter,
living a good life.
But they changed my fate.
How could I not hate them?
I clapped my hands.
“Bring him in.”
It was time for their surprise.
A skinny boy walked in, looking scared.
He was trying to stay calm, but the smell of
urine filled the air.
My dad looked at him, horrified.
He knew something bad was about to
happen.
“What are you doing? Why are you bringing a
retard to Brian’s graduation party?”
My mom stopped yelling and stared at the
boy.
I smiled.
“He’s your precious son, Brian!”
He couldn’t believe what he was hearing and
started cursing.
“You bitch! You’re cursing Brian!”
“Brian was smart. How could he become
this?”
I didn’t say anything.
Even though Brian was an idiot, he knew he
was embarrassing himself.
He started crying.
My mom ran to him and took off her clothes
to cover him.
Then, she wiped away his tears.
My dad was angry.
“What are you doing? Why are you caring
about an idiot?”
After so many years of separation, seeing her
son made her react.
“He’s not an idiot! He’s my child, and I know
it!”
“You’re heartless! I can’t watch him make a
fool of himself!”
