Peter’s hometown was the kind of deeply conservative small town where an unplanned pregnancy basically meant a wedding was non-negotiable.

Peter’s family was strutting around like they’d scored the jackpot-an instant daughter-in-law and a future grandson without spending a cent.
Until, of course, they found out Rachel was buried under hundreds of thousands in debt.
Then it was probably nothing but tears and regret.
The thought made me laugh, really laugh, for the first time in a while.
“So,” Ethan said, his voice softening, “now that all that’s settled… can I finally get my shot?”
For once, that cocky, playful face of his was edged with real nervousness.
I stared at him for a long moment.
His palms were practically sweating under my gaze.
Finally, I broke into a bright grin.
‘Of course you can, dear boyfriend.”
