Chapter 7
“You, your brother, and your entire Brooks family are absolutely disgusting!”
Those words had been burning in my chest for years, and finally, I spat them out.
The crowd gasped, clearly shocked by such a revelation.
“No wonder she wants a divorce-turns out their relationship really is inappropriate. And they’re not even blood relatives!”
“God, we messed up. We actually hit someone who was innocent.”
“That sister is sickening-clinging to her brother during thunderstorms, insisting he sleep beside her? She’s not a child anymore!”
“She’s a grown woman. Can’t she find her own boyfriend? Always running to her brother with no boundaries at all. That’s what’s truly revolting.”
“It’s not true-it’s not like that!” Chloe Miller, realizing the tide was turning, grew frantic. She quickly tried to defend herself. “Don’t listen to her lies!”
“Enough!” Daniel Brooks stormed over, his face black with fury. He pulled Chloe into his arms protectively, then grabbed my wrist, squeezing hard.
“Apologize to Chloe. You’ve gone too far, slandering her like this. She’s just childish and naïve. I only stayed with her during a storm because she was scared, and I neglected you for a moment. You really want to make an issue out of that?”
How easily he twisted the situation, brushing off everything as though it were perfectly
normal.
I struggled against his grip, pain shooting through my wrist as his fingers dug in. My lips drained of color, but I refused to beg for mercy.
Thankfully, the police arrived just then. After asking about the incident, they pulled surveillance footage. Because the disturbance was serious, everyone who had assaulted
me was taken away.
Chloe’s eyes locked on mine, her voice low and sharp. “Sister-in-law, now you’ve dragged the entire Brooks family’s name through the mud. Are you happy?”
I ignored her and turned toward the company entrance. But she buzzed around me like a fly, refusing to let go.
“Sister-in-law, stop pretending you’re not acting out of spite. You knew my brother was supposed to sign a contract with the Carter Group’s new manager today, and you caused this scene on purpose. I understand you’re upset, but you’ve embarrassed our whole family. You’ve gone too far.”
Her words froze me. Daniel was working with my family’s company?
I quickly texted my father, asking if it was true.
His reply came within minutes, and when I read it, guilt washed over me.
All these years, though angry with me, my father had still quietly looked out for me.
Whenever there was a business opportunity, he had chosen to give it to Daniel first.
No wonder Daniel had flourished so quickly after our marriage, winning major contracts one after another. It had all been my father, quietly paving the way-making sure his daughter wouldn’t suffer.
My chest tightened, and I exhaled slowly. After replying to my father, I turned back to Daniel.
“The renewal contract for the new quarter? Don’t bother bringing it over. The Carter Group will no longer do business with you.”
“In the past, my father only helped you for my sake. But from today onward, our two families are enemies.”
