Chapter 96 A Carefully Laid Trap
Several minutes passed with no reply from Nathan.
Ethan was losing his mind.
He kept opening the message he’d sent, reading it again and again.
No matter how he looked at it, there didn’t seem to be anything wrong.
He’d even prepped the perfect excuse Mr. Foster just had to accept it.
Sure, he wanted to use the situation to drive Lucas away, but this was also a golden opportunity for Nathan to spend time with Stella!
Unless… he’d read it all wrong and Mr. Foster didn’t actually like Stella?
Oh no.
Ethan’s left hand spun the rosary on his right wrist over and over.
It had already been well over two minutes–way too late to delete the message!
Groaning, he rubbed his temple with the rosary hand and quickly typed out another
message:
“Mr. Foster, the dinner’s been canceled. I’ll pick my sister up myself. Sorry to trouble and sorry for the interruption!”
But just as he hit send–Nathan replied.
“Hm? Canceled? Are you sure?”
Ethan’s eyes went wide. What did that mean?
Trying to read the man’s mind was like deciphering a foreign language!
He hesitated, then typed, “Actually, maybe not canceled…”

His feet were cramping from all the pacing.

This wasn’t working. Lucas tapped a finger against the bridge of his nose, deep in thought.
After a moment, inspiration struck.
He stood and turned to Hannah. “Take a break, I need to make a work call. The film crew’s been nagging me to come back to set. I want to ask for a few more days off to stay with you.”
Hannah was touched. “Thank you, Lucas. Love you!”
He pinched her cheek with a grin, then headed out.
At the nurse’s station, Lucas found the head nurse.
The moment she saw him, she greeted him respectfully. “Mr. Lucas, how can I help you?”
Lucas pulled her aside. “Find a way to get the family member from Room 1004 to come out.”
She frowned. “Um, that might be a bit—”
Lucas cut her off coldly. “You can’t do it? Want to lose your job?”
Her scalp tingled. “I can do it! Right away!”
God, this shift’s unbearable.
Another day, another wish to blow up the whole hospital.
Even as she cursed him silently, her brain was working fast. Back at the station, she tapped -the call system.
This hospital’s beds came with a communication unit at the headboard–nurses could be called in, or they could page patients and family members to come out.
Jenn was asleep.
Stella had grown tired after solving problems and was now resting on the couch near the balcony.
The caregiver had washed and cut up some fruit and now brought it over. “Ms. Stella, have some fruit.”

The quiet kid with the long bangs had told her to remind Stella, and he’d even bought the fruit himself.
Stella sat up.
“Thanks.”
The caregiver smiled and handed her a fork. “Here, use this.”
The moment she saw the fork, Stella thought of the last time she’d stabbed Nathan’s hand with one.
She wondered how that wound was healing.
She hadn’t really checked.
Suddenly-
“Hello? Hello? Is the patient’s family member in Room 1004 present?”
A voice blared from the headboard speaker.
Jenn jolted awake, immediately hugging her arms and curling up in fear. “Who… who’s talking?”
The caregiver quickly reassured her. “It’s someone from the nurse’s station.”
Stella got up from the couch and went to the bed, gently patting Jenn’s shoulder to comfort. her. “I’m here. What’s going on?”
The voice replied, “Please come out to the nurse’s station to pick something up.”
Stella had never been hospitalized before, so she obediently followed the nurse’s instructions. “Okay, I’ll be right there.”
The caregiver, a responsible middle–aged woman, said, “I’ll go.”
But Stella had been cooped up in the room too long and was glad for the chance to walk. She shook her head. “It’s fine. You stay with Jenn. I’ll go.”
Back in Room 1005, Lucas–now knowing Stella would be stepping out–rushed back at top speed.
Hannah was still lying in bed.
Lucas grabbed her good hand. “Babe, you feeling better? Let’s go walk some more. I just talked to a nurse, and they said walking will help your recovery.”

Hannah eyed him suspiciously. “Really?”
How was walking supposed to help a broken arm?
