The head nurse, trailing behind Hannah, caught every word she’d just said. Her vision went dark–this felt like her world had crumbled.
Lucas spotted Hannah down the corridor, her arm in a sling. Her face was pale, and her already delicate frame looked even frailer, as if a single gust of wind might knock her over.
A flicker of concern crossed his face. He quickened his pace. “Hannah, does it still hurt?”
The moment she heard him, tears welled in her eyes and spilled over, falling like pear blossoms in the rain. “Lucas, it hurts so much.”
He slipped an arm around her shoulders, his voice low and gentle. “It’s alright. You’ll be better soon. Now tell me–who refused to give you the room you wanted?”
Hannah sniffled, laying the groundwork before he heard the rest. “It’s partly my fault. The room I like is already taken, and the people inside don’t want to move. The head nurse even told me I shouldn’t be asking for it.”
Her tears wiped away what little patience he had. “They’ll have to switch. My woman, in my family’s hospital, should be able to stay anywhere she wants.”
The corners of Hannah’s lips twitched upward in the faintest smile.
Lucas, masked and capped for disguise, turned on the head nurse. “How did you handle this? You can’t even manage something this simple?”
The nurse felt her chest tighten in frustration. She had already found a solution.
“The patient’s family-”
“Tell them if they won’t move, they can transfer to another hospital,” Lucas cut in sharply.
And then he saw who the “patient’s family” was.
Stella.
She was holding a honey bun, dressed casually in a simple black T–shirt and loose, wide- legged pants. Her hair, usually tied back, hung loose over her shoulders in dark, silky waves. She wore no makeup, yet her skin was luminous, her profile striking in its perfection- smooth nose bridge, flawless lines. Even the inexpensive pastry in her pale fingers seemed like something rare and delicate.

Hannah stood by, practically glowing with smug satisfaction, watching the head nurse squirm. Forcing Stella to transfer would be just fine with her–anything to make sure Stella didn’t get too comfortable.
But then Lucas’s tone shifted in an instant.
“There’s no way we’re transferring a patient. This hospital has never had a policy of forcing
someone out.”
The head nurse, who’d been staring down at the floor, lifted her head in shock. “Excuse me?”
Hannah’s eyes widened. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
The collision of two worlds hit Lucas without warning–on one side, the woman he’d thought gone forever, his long–lost crush; on the other, the fragile, injured girlfriend in his arms.
He couldn’t make an outright choice. But one thing was certain: he wouldn’t let Stella be moved. The hospital was one of the few places he could still be near her.
Maybe she’d heard the voices in the hall, because Stella glanced toward the doorway. Lucas, caught off guard, stepped back quickly, avoiding her eyes. Without giving her the chance to see him clearly, he turned Hannah toward the room next door.
“Hannah, a hospital’s like a restaurant. You don’t kick people out once they’re here. And we’re public figures—if a patient posted something like that online, you know exactly what kind of storm it would stir up. The backlash could be ugly for both of us.”
Hannah’s brow furrowed.
Seeing Stella had sent her temper spiking, but thinking it through, maybe he had a point. That woman wasn’t the type to back down quietly. Last time, she’d even recorded their conversation. If she pulled the same stunt again, Hannah might end up humiliated.
Her lashes lowered, lips jutting in a small, sullen pout. “But I—”
Lucas drew her into his arms, giving her back a soothing pat. “Be good, baby. I’ll buy you that bag you’ve been eyeing.”
Her voice softened instantly. “Alright. I’ll listen to you, Lucas.”
His gaze shifted slightly.
Stella was still avoiding him, refusing to give him any opening to get close. That meant an apology wouldn’t cut it. He’d have to take another route–like jealousy.

It had worked before. When Hannah had been upset with him in the past, he’d ignored her at first… until he saw her linked to Ethan in the gossip columns. The jealousy had gotten to him, and he’d gone to find her himself.
“I think this room will do. Why don’t you stay here?” Lucas asked.
Hannah glanced around. The space was nice, with a large balcony. “Alright. My arm hurts too much to move again anyway.”
Lucas called the head nurse back in to handle the paperwork. She was still dazed–how had Mr. Lucas’s attitude turned around so fast?
“Where’s your assistant?” Lucas asked.
“She went back to pack my things,” Hannah said. “The accident was so sudden–it was terrifying.”
